    hello

i am doing a magazine for my graduation project.
one of the themes is pop culture and how it can inspire people.
can you tell me what inspired you in the pop culture to do what you are doing now?
for example.for me it was the autobot logo of the transfomer cartoon.
do you have a icon like that.and can you explain in a few sentences why.
    thanks in advance

I always used to be crazy for consumerism... I mean the whole thing, the shine, the glitter, the razzamatazz, the logos, the type, the neon
signs, even stickers on bananas and apples looked cool, I loved the idea of branding, the life of a brand, that seemed amazing, how it was possible to 'control' the perceived soul of a company, how something
could be made to look good, to smell good and people would actually 'care' for a product, brand loyalty..what suckers... now that is something amazing, I want to get into that I thought.

I really used to believe in the future, I really thought that everything could only get better. There was going to be better transport systems, teleports and replicators, crazy flavours of ice cream
and big carparks with perfect tarmac, like I'd see in the skate vids, those american cities with those perfect streets and those shopping malls and their cool carparks with rails and kerbs and banks and gaps, I wanted to skate there, I wanted to drink the fucking cola and taste the future, now I may have gone on a tangent there but I think that was part of what got me into this, I was always fascinated by it and I wanted to play a part.

I knew that it was just a dream, a dream given to me by the TV companies and the ad agencies, a utopia promised to us for the cost of a branded beverage under a fancy new name, we could live in that world
if we filled our home with labels and products, we could buy design and be better humans for it, our quality of life would be improved.. I mean look at those ladies in the 1950's ads with their push up bra's and their rosy cheeks and their big streamlined fridges and curling tongues; they're happy right? The dream worked for them didn't it?

I knew the smell of freshly baked bread in the supermarket wasn't real and I knew that golf courses put blue dye in their ponds, I knew that those sneakers weren't any more comfortable than the ones half the price but give me the Nike! Give me the fucking airbag man and the plastic tag on the tongue! Brand loyalty - sucker! No this wasn't loyalty I was buying in. I knew it was bullshit but I was in for the
dream, I was buying my ticket to the future.. give me the brand name's I dont want that own-name cereal in my bowl I want Kelloggs, I want the Frosties with the ET stickers, give me the Coke in a PacMan glass and don't stand in front of the TV when The 64 Million Dollar Man is on.

I wanted to create the dreams of the future. I guess we're all a bit naive when we're young.

The ghostbusters logo made me shit my pants! I then drew it everywhere, I was nine.
I still shit my pants now.

I love the autobot logo too.

However for me it was the firebird logo.

(also mullets and zebra striped pants)

the first time i was drawn to design was through lego. the illustrations in the manuals, the blocks and packaging were so amazing to me. i still play with 'em.

yeah i guess so;i really like your piece rasko.its going to go in the magazine.
its just i am really inspired by the pop culture...and i wanted to see who else has the same feeling.the whole mgasin is also of talking this material(transformrs, eighties infographics, traffic signs, cheezy eighties jingles,;..)and place it in a different context.i heard james lavelle on the eye for an eye dvd talking about the concept of the video;.using the disney-fairytale characters to tell a story that could grasp peoples attention better dan ordinary live footage.but to use this material i want(the stuff we got inspired by)ii want like some sort of counterweight..that comes in the form of you guys and the way this material influenced you.

ok things I was into and formed my visual eye perhaps..

skateboarding, powell decks by VC Johnson in particular.

    Graffiti, heavily.

Arcades, I lived in arcades during the 80's, fuck knows how much ca$h i wasted on games like New Zealand Story, Mario, 720, Crime Fighters, Mr Wardner, fruit machines etc.

stickers, I used to go out at night and steal surf stickers off cars and camper vans, I had hundreds and would sell them to kids at school. That ties in with the logos that I used to constantly scribble on my school books.

Cartoons, Cities of Gold, Dungeons and Dragons, Battle of the Planets, Pac Land, cartoons were great, love em.

Neon advertising lights. seriously, I really wanted to go to Japan when I was like 15 because in my opinion they had the best and most prolific neon lighting.

T-shirts, I screened my first few of t-shirt back in 1990, one was the old school bbc tv logo and just the big 'tv' part on the back, everyone took the piss and said I was a secret tranny haha, one was a pixelated dove like you would get on E's and some others of wierd logos I had made, all taken from things around me or hijacked somehow.

and now I have to get back to work.. maybe more later.

coolio shaped me. and the mentos ads, mentos. the freshmaker. its not just a visual thing, its a feeling, that you get when bbh and jwt and media companies bring everything together in seeming harmony, everything is right. but the most beautiful thing about pop culture? its movement. we like that.
