I want to draw a line in aftereffects like the one on this movie of fluxen:
http://www.fluxen.com/resolve_qt…
After about 17 seconds you see the line on the right side of the screen... that's the animation I'm talking about.
I think it's done by masks, but I can't figure out how... Any tips? Thanks!

They got a plugin called 3d-stroke. That could do it.
:)

know these trapcode plugins, but I don't think that's the way he did it...

what you do is you create a path (with the mask tool or you can copy it from Illustrator)
asign the Render>Stroke Effect
you can then play (and animate) the 'end' value.
After you got the animation you want make the layer 2.5D (click the 3D layer icon in the timeline) and play with the layer position in space.
hope this helps.

Thanks. But id doesn't seem to work. I a path in illustrator using the line tool... that's ok right?
When I import the file into AE and want to use the stroke effect nothing shows up. Am I doing something wrong?

bring the path in as a mask, then set the path tab to 'mask' in the stroke dialog box.
it will stroke the path.
then you can set the start position and the end position of the stroke. setting the start position at 25 will leave the first 1/4th of the path unstroked.
you animate that value.
a 3D program will allow you to do the same thing but you can do more with it.
hope this helps.

That was a beautiful movie. Thanks for sharing. The stroke mask must be the way to do it.

yeah if your mask doesnt paste in go to your ai settings and change your aicb thingy to export as pathes... you'll find it

'stroke' with 'start' and 'end' is the way to do it, no need to use masks on this one.
Make a path using any tool in illy,
make a solid layer in AE, copy the path from illy to ae, it will paste as a mask. if the path is not selected automatically—select it from the effect control>path>mask#.If the path is not pasted in AE, go Illy prefs>files & clipboard and select 'AICB"
God speed:)

CyBrainX, ou should check the other stuff on fluxen.com if you don't know it already. Beautiful motion work like this:

I'm learning AE for the moment so what do you think about my first try to reproduce the line animation?
- j_red0
good work, you got the effect.
- CyBrainX0
Xentic, Nice work.
One of the very nice things Fluxen does is timing. The way things accelerate and finish are very well considered. In your animation, everything works well, but reconsider how the 5th and 6th circles reveal. It happens a bit too fast to appreciate as much as the first three.

thanks CyBrainX, I think you're right! Good advice!

Hey Xentric!
that was sooo sweeet.
I tried following your instructions but can't get the path to animate.
kindly post the AEP file for us newbies to drool over.. :)
thanks!
