  'stroke' with 'start' and 'end' is the way to do it, no need to use masks on this one.

  Make a path using any tool in illy,
  make a solid layer in AE, copy the path from illy to ae, it will paste as a mask. if the path is not selected automatically—select it from the effect control>path>mask#.

  If the path is not pasted in AE, go Illy prefs>files & clipboard and select 'AICB"
