I'm just on my 24th comp for a single website for one client. I'm curious how many anyone else has had to do before getting any agreement on a layout.
Admittedly some of them are basically variations, but it seems too much to me. Normally two or three does the trick.

that my dear boy, sounds like you are dealing with idiotic marketing types who are under the false impression that they hold some creative talent, they're all the same.
I just hope youre billing for their shit and aren't losing the will to live.
the funny thing is, they'll end up with something really close to what you started with is likely.

OUCH, that is way too many COMPS unless you are billing extra ????
I would start putting a line in your contracts that anything above and beyond 3 comps or (x) amount of hours will have to be renagotiated or subject to an (x) amount hourly fee.
Your getting screwed and not really sure if you can do much at this point with this client since you have already started bending over backwords. They are assuming at this point that all of these changes are apart of your service and ultimatley apart of your fee.
Hope that puts things into perspective for you.

i just got out of a project like that. did about 20 comps and the client still wasnt happy. last week she saw some ruff pencil scethes we had done, and she grabbed it and said 'we want it exactly like that, exactly'. so we scanned in the pencil scetch, added a photo then presto, a website. Most times its the clients fault for not being able to express what it is they want.
best of luck with it, a nicer job will be along soon

That a bit over the top to say the least.
The most I have ever done was about 10 ithink. And that was for the MTV art director, he was a moody fucker all the time.

and keep the comps you've done. we made an extranet with about 40 unused comps for various clients on it, its great to give the url to clients prior to designing, lets them see the different styles and they normally pick a handful they like

It's not just me then.
The comps I've done are really variations on three or four central themes. Normally I would just refuse, but the account is for a reasonable amount of money, and ultimately there is another site to be done for a sister company that will be in the same vein (ie. much easier to finish).
The client is looking them over now. If one of them is not suitable I don't really see as I can continue with the job. If you saw some of the sites that I was told to look at for inspiration you would actually laugh quite a lot.
Other clients will get the unused designs as I really like most of the ones I've done.

"Most times its the clients fault for not being able to express what it is they want."
I think it is our responsibility as designers to help a client clarify what it is they want/need. It is rare when I meet with a client who can very clearly articulate to me what they want.
The last time I had to do 10 comps for a client was because his wife got involved...there's no way to prepare for that disaster. :(
