I’m working on a several page brochure in InDesign. The files contains tiff files that have been created in Photoshop and eps files that have been imported from Illustrator, as well as a number of shapes created directly in InDesign. The Colour Management Settings in Photoshop and Illustrator are set to “CMYK: US Web Coated (SWOP2)”
When I turn the Colour Management in InDesign on, all of the colours with CMYK values seem to shift, not their values but their appearance on screen. I have matched these colours from a Pantone book (not using Pantone Values but the Process equivalent).

    My Questions:

Can I just work with Colour management turned off in all apps?

How will that affect my final output?

Will changing the Colour Management setting alter the way a process colour will print?

What are potential problems with Colour Management?

I'm willing to be corrected if I'm wrong... but...

Color management is for adjusting the colors and apperences of files before you print. I doesn't affect the way your injet/laser printer will handle it. Nor will it affect your final output at a printer.

What it's for is this: If you know the end method of production - the profiles will better help you to predict the outcome. If your monitor isn't calibrated properly - it won't really matter anyway. It's also really sensless to work with multiple profiles.

I usually work in Sheetfed Coated as my work is almost always run on a sheetfed press. It actually works well in desaturating the colors on screen so my end product won't be washed out.

    So to answer your questions:

Work with CM in all app's - but use the same profile accross.

No your output (color values) will not be affected by CM. But you WILL end up with inconsistent results if you aren't consistent with your CM profiles. And your project may look totally different when you go to press.

    does that make sense??

Thanks for the help Gorbie. I think I'm starting to understand...

"No your output (color values) will not be affected by CM. But you WILL end up with inconsistent results if you aren't consistent with your CM profiles. "

This happens becuase an image that is brought into an app with a different colour management setting will handle the screen appearance of that image dfferently. It won't print the way it appears, but it will print looking like the origional image? If that makes any sense at all...

I convert ALL images to the profile I'm using for that project. That way the image will look the same in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.

If your images look consistent on screen (using the same profile) - they will print consistent aswell. And that's what I always go for - consistency.

Great stuff, this is starting to be clear - thanks again for all help Gorbie.
