i'm thinking of moving there around fall of 04. i've never been before, so i'm looking for some recommendations on what are the best spots to check out on my next vacation.
where are some good places to visit, or should i just get a cali travel guide?

I grew up in San Francisco, so that's where my vote goes.

start down souf and head norf.
San Diego -> (sme)LA -> Santa Barbara -> Monterey -> San Francisco -> Oakland/Berkeley -> Sacramento -> Tahoe
or do you not have a couple weeks to tour? :)
- mitsu0
i'm going to take off for a week so that might be a crunch...

if you have limited amount of time and can fly up north.. start in san deigo... take a train to LA... fly out of LAX to san fransico.. check out berkley if you have time. choose whatever major city vibes you best.
there have been many discussions on whats better.. LA or SF.... but i really think it depends on the kind of person you are in the end. southern california is way better for me. east coasters tend to like SF better.

How will you be getting around?
Do you prefer the Lo-Cal dude bro scene... or the NoCal snob scene? ;)

mitsu, if you make it to Tahoe, i wanna see you hide under a table for real!

& if youre in california and need someone to shwo you around a bit... i love being a tour guide around LA.

looking for a scene w/ some cultured people. those who are into the arts, music, movies (not hollywood movies), etc... i'm not looking for the stereotypical art snobs or even neo hipsters (we have plenty of those here in dallas), but if that goes with the territory, so be it. i've got a pair of thick-rimmed hillman curtis glasses to suit the occasion (whatever that may be)

hmmm...well, definitely don't go to Reno then unless you like gambling, NASCAR and cowboy poetry (though it *is* getting better here each day).
Be close enough so that if we do another Sacramento Drinks meet up, you can be there too.

btw, thanks for all the suggestions!

don't forget modesto!

Important deciding factor:
my most favorite sushi restaurant is in Roseville (outskirts of Sac).

I can really only speak from a northern stand-point so..
San Francisco has it all. The drawback is that people who live there - never leave there. That can be good or bad. I love SF - but I also love the east bay (oakland & berkeley).
I live in Sacramento and I like it here. Very unpretentious and humble in it's attitude. There is also a small but vibrant art scene and very good local bands. There are a couple old art-deco theaters that show great films too.
I am down in the bay atleast once every month - and that's easy cause it's only an hour drive. Tahoe is also an hour away - and Lake Tahoe is a beautiful place.

which soochi joint you talking about, mayo?

Sushi-Ya. It's where i celebrate a good days worth of comic shopping. ever been there Gorbie? The Warren Roll is DAMN GOOD. so are all the specials.
- Gorbie0
that's right you told me that! haven't been, though.
They just built a new Mikuni (well known sacto sushi) in an old brick building next to my place. They also built a bunch of über-fancy-pants lofts above it. If I lived there I don't think i'd leave my own building.
i'm hungry.
so you got your intinerary sorted, mitsu?
- mitsu0
not yet, i'm bringing a friend, so i'm going to run some of these ideas by her and then we'll work out the schedule together. hopefully, i'll be able to meet up with some of you while we're there.
- Gorbie0
Well if you want me to list areas or sights in Northern Cal - lemme know.
Take your vacation next week and hit up the Noise Pop festival in SF.

if you like the stereotypical california weather, don't move to San Francisco. It gets way too freaking cold there. I grew up in Sacramento and moved to LA about 2 1/2 years ago. i love the weather here (it's actually overcast right now though) and it's great for the arts. traffic and smog in LA are the worst in the united states, but i don't want to leave. that's how much i love it here. it's weird, the first 2 or so years i lived here, i t hougth i hated it. then i went home to sacramento for about a week and a half, and i missed LA so much. now i realize i love la. maybe smog is addicting?
