  I can really only speak from a northern stand-point so..

  San Francisco has it all. The drawback is that people who live there - never leave there. That can be good or bad. I love SF - but I also love the east bay (oakland & berkeley).

  I live in Sacramento and I like it here. Very unpretentious and humble in it's attitude. There is also a small but vibrant art scene and very good local bands. There are a couple old art-deco theaters that show great films too.

  I am down in the bay atleast once every month - and that's easy cause it's only an hour drive. Tahoe is also an hour away - and Lake Tahoe is a beautiful place.
