if you have limited amount of time and can fly up north.. start in san deigo... take a train to LA... fly out of LAX to san fransico.. check out berkley if you have time. choose whatever major city vibes you best.
there have been many discussions on whats better.. LA or SF.... but i really think it depends on the kind of person you are in the end. southern california is way better for me. east coasters tend to like SF better.
