My opinion:
Anything that you can hang on a wall, refridgerator, lampshade, balcony, etc is art.
I mean, people buy prints of the constitution, and although they don't think about it, they find it beautiful enough to hang on their wall, and then its art.

"Art is design when culture is the client" -ammansabet
werd...except other way around
design is art when culture is the client...but most design will contribute to culture...hence most design is art although not all art is design...but all can be broken down into principals and elements universal to all design and art without stupid boundaries...screw categorization and specialization...

by the way, you are a complete idiot fate:
A designer has restrictions, and artist doesn't.
Pretty simple.
- fate0
Are you quoting me?
Anyway, you cannot say a designer does not have restrictions.
And it would defy the history of art to say it truly has restrictions.
- junetic0
everything has restrictions...'restrictions' can be anything from the the way a watercolor brush leaves drips and wrinkles the paper to your client wanting only blues with helvetica used in the type...

Well I was hoping to keep this a little more precise. Like how I mentioned earlier the limitation of mediums for communication.
Isn't that what design is? Communicating ideas? And isn't that one of the things art doesn't care about? People interpret art in many ways. People create art many times to have more than one interpretation. But it's not about what CMYK combination works best to get black, or whether my flash file will download too slow for dial-up. Art transcends these things.

do you not have different interpretations of designs from the audi TT to the work of the Russian Constructivists? Were not the Stenberg brothers artists AND designers who made movie posters? Was not Le Corbusier also a painter? Art does not care about ideas???? wow...I do not want to be rude but you should read up on art/design history and find out how 'design' came to be from William Diggins coining the term 'graphic design' to conceptual art....please open your mind and try to understand what you do not know...
- fate0
No, I never said art doesn't care about ideas. I said art doesn't care about a set interpretation.

And this isn't an issue about designers vs. artists. There's no question that someone can be both.

people go completely fucking crazy if they can't catagorize every little thing; it seems a little funny if you think about it.
kinda reminds me of someone trying to figure out which genre bin Beck albums go...
