A designer has restrictions, and artist doesn't.
Pretty simple.

i think it's cool to be both, that's why i am...it makes life easier. if you wanna call me an artist, go for it. if you think i'm a designer, great. as long as you like and respect what i push out, who gives a shit.
word to your mother.

if you have the luxury of choosing your own clients, you don't have restrictions at all.
- bug0
...and "F" in front of "art" is still funny...
- fate0
stewart, sure you do. You don't just shit on a piece of paper and add it to the portfolio. You design /for/ a medium and follow corresponding guidelines.

to quote the locals:
"ya'll's jes' ate the fuck up wi' ign'ernce."
- bug0
if you put an "F" infront of "art"...it's funny.

distinction?
desktop publisher / graphic designer?i'd say 1/8 of what i design is art.
7/8 is organization or some shit.but keep in mind that 1/8 of my personality is highly pretentious and wears all black.
=D

fate, i don't add that to my portfolio because i have my own restrictions.

Designers not artists..
Yup, there is a lot of people that think like that here..
I think we are, or at least I am.
I apply my art for commercial purposes, just like Magritte, Dali, Miro, and Ernst did.
Or you thought they where doing it for free?

Can't believe this debate is still going on. Sheesh!
Here's the way I see it.
You can be an artist if you like, you can be a designer if you like. You can't push the two together to give what you do more gravity.
You can create art through the same mediums as you create a design, but art and design exsist on completely different levels, in that art's function is simply to 'be art'. This obviously brings in to question the fateful 'what is art?' thing. I guess the answer to that is, don't ask. Artists don't ask what art is. They know what art is the same way as someone in love knows what love is, you just can't write it down in such a way that the average fuckwit newmedia grad will fathom.
What folks need to do is look at the history of art, find out WHY certain abjects are art, what are the criteria they fulfill. Go fom there . .
For example, the Duchamp urinal is art because the New York Independants Society decided that anyone who could fill in a form and pay $6 could exhibit. this effectively made anyone with literacy skills and $6 an artist. Thats the reason why cans of shit and bricks and melons and sharks can be art.
Fucking hell, I'm going off on one now.
Anyway, some designers are artists too. Some are also fathers, or skaters, or writers, or hookers, or whatever.
