Can't believe this debate is still going on. Sheesh!

Here's the way I see it.

You can be an artist if you like, you can be a designer if you like. You can't push the two together to give what you do more gravity.

You can create art through the same mediums as you create a design, but art and design exsist on completely different levels, in that art's function is simply to 'be art'. This obviously brings in to question the fateful 'what is art?' thing. I guess the answer to that is, don't ask. Artists don't ask what art is. They know what art is the same way as someone in love knows what love is, you just can't write it down in such a way that the average fuckwit newmedia grad will fathom.

What folks need to do is look at the history of art, find out WHY certain abjects are art, what are the criteria they fulfill. Go fom there . .

For example, the Duchamp urinal is art because the New York Independants Society decided that anyone who could fill in a form and pay $6 could exhibit. this effectively made anyone with literacy skills and $6 an artist. Thats the reason why cans of shit and bricks and melons and sharks can be art.

Fucking hell, I'm going off on one now.

Anyway, some designers are artists too. Some are also fathers, or skaters, or writers, or hookers, or whatever.

    .......
