blackface was a direct jab at black people in a time when civil rights were non existent. so if someone were to do it today then yes it would be derogatory and therefore could be frowned upon. (i.e. ted danson)
if dressing up in fashions from other cultures is negative and offensive, then halloween should be banned.

well everyone knows native americans have always had it so well in this country... why should they complain if they feel their culture is being made fun of? Like I said, it's not up to you whether it's offensive, it's up to the culture whose traditions/culture are being made light of.

that article/letter was ridiculous for many reasons, too many of which to try and type all of them
one statement that stands out is "Had the dancers been wearing Hassidic Jewish, Catholic, or Muslim symbols, they would not have been allowed to perform."
check: madonna and other celebrities popularizing mehendi.theres a difference in trying to teach kids to respect other cultures rather than teaching them to fear retribution if they happen to wear something that resembles an item used or worn by another culture. this is going too far

i agree its not up to me, but if i was as uptight about my ancestry, then i could whine about groundskeeper willie, mike meyers making fun of scots on SNL as well as fat bastard, anyone making a joke about wearing kilts, anyone doing a sean connery impression, the list can go on. im proud of my heritage so i can laugh it off

what measuring stick do you use to determine if something has gone too far? is it okay until mcleod says it isn't? I would think that your average native american would have a different viewpoint on what is okay and what isn't in regards to how their culture is portrayed to the masses. Just like your average muslim/jew/catholic would have a different viewpoint on what is okay in their respective cultures/religions.
Just because the letter makes a bad analogy doesn't make it any less offensive to those people.
as for "this is going to far", again, to far for whom?

When culture becomes a consumer good then it's in trouble and, unfortunately, open season for everybody else. Please note the xmas tree decorations on the first link. Classic example of how to bastardize a 'culture'.

It's looks like the time has come to ban all ART forms and Self Expression.
Did the Scottish take offense when the video was shot? Did he have the rights to wear that tartan from the family that it belongs to?
Crazy stuff.

all outkast did was dress up in native american style outfits. i would like to see what the complainants would say if a child came up to their house on halloween dressed up in the exact same outfit (had outkast not done it first). would they tell that child to get away because it was offensive? would they make the child apologize publicly for his or her lack of respect for the native american cultures? i highly doubt it. i honestly believe that outkast didnt mean any disrespect to native americans in choosing their outfits. its about to become a segregation issue because youll have to stick to your own kind when it comes to fashion and common practices in daily life, otherwise face the wrath of any and all cultures that you dont belong to. thats why i think going to far.
one boys opinion

"Ignorance to the fact that other cultures exist outside of your own"
Works both ways doesn't it?
The respect for the christan faith should also be taken into account should it not?I am no racist or ignorant, I am as openminded as you are, I just feel society creates more problems for race relations by the clumsy way in which trys to by PC.

I don't think outkast "meant" to offend anyone either. the main difference between white people of euorpean descent making fun of other europeans and a group making light of native american culture is the fact that native americans were almost completely wiped out and what little culture they have remaining is being grossly misrepresented by those that have no or little idea what they are doing. If you were a member of a nearly extinct culture, and were trying to teach or promote your culture in the way it was meant to be to others, you would be a bit taken back every time someone broadcasted to millions of people that which you were trying to over come.
Like I said, it was an unfortunate choice that outkast made in that performance, I don't think they meant anything by it. But for people to say that native americans are being ridiculous by not liking it is just ignorant.
- Jamesh0
Why should outkast be so sensitive? i think their ancestors were to busy being slaves to take part in the mass murder known as 'how the west was won'.
besides...it was done in good taste.
Injuns just ain't funky wit da crunky!
- Jamesh0
That indian village person isn't being PC.

like the articles say, the feathers, their outfits, the face paint etc. all have relgious meaning to native americans. what if outkast had each performer hold a bible? i don't think women dancing around in a sexual manner with a bible would be accepted very well. substitute the head dresses with a bible and you can see why the native americans are upset.
- North_20
abstrakt If the bible thing is in reference to my post, I wasn't reffering to outkast with the christian thing, my earlier post was about how society can create more problems through it's censorship selection, anyhow women waving bibles that would just look silly?
- abstrakt0
it wasn't in response to your comments.
it would look silly, yes. it would also piss off almost every christian. the blind ones might not get too upset until someone told them, but after that, every christian would be really upset.
i'm just saying, the bible is a sacred thing to christians... feathers and head dresses are sacred things to native americans.

Ah I see what you did there.
I think religon is important, but the fucking trouble it can cause [ie Israel] makes being an atheist very attractive indeed, 'cause lets face it, fuck knows why we are all here and the grounding religon provides as a template for life has so many layers.

anyone watched mel brooks' history of the world I?
- enobrev0
you know what.. next time i see someone in baggy jeans, a shitty t-shirt and some fucked up sneakers, i'm writing letters. racist bastards.
