I'm thinking of buying a Mac laptop (don't waste your time recommending a PC) to replace my G4 iMac (800 mhz w/ superdrive, 15" screen, 32mb geforce mx)
I'm leaning towards the Powerbook G4 family because I will need this laptop for photoshop, flash, illustrator, and possibly some gaming. I talked to a guy at the Apple store and he recommended the 12" powerbook, but I like the features of the 15" model better (faster processor, faster bus, better video card). I require mobility and will theoretically be plugging it into a 2nd monitor half the time anyways when i do my work.
So should I settle for the 12" model and save some money, or should i splurge for the 15" model with the better video card? keep in mind that I love to play games when i'm not working, so the 64mb vid card would be nice...

Well none of us can really tell you what you want. But it sounds like you realy do want the 15" so go for it so ou dont regret getting a different one.

the 15.
because i wouldnt want to be stuck at 1024x when im not hooked up to a second monitor.

15" superdrive is the shit. don't get a 12 if you plan on playing games or doing your design work. that would get so old, the 12 is a great machine, don't get me wrong but the screen is so small. Go 15, do it, do it now.

If you're replacing a desktop, I would definitely warn against the 12". They're great, but if you're going to REALLY use a computer, you don't want a 12" anything to be your primary machine. The 12" is popular because it's cheaper, and unless you really need all the features that some of the higher-end Macs have, you could easily go for it. Random user #784 may not be a designer or have any "need" for a Mac, but just prefers them, and wants something to type papers and get online with. They could go with a 12". The 12" is portable, another HUGE bonus. I personally own a 17", and while it's still portable in a way, it sucks to carry across a large college campus every day.
The 15" not only has more features, it will make you feel more at home if you're switching over from a 15" iMac. If you're just looking for portability and a second machine, go with the 12". If you're really looking to upgrade to another machine rather than just have a second computer, go with the 15". It's more expensive, but I think in your case, it's definitely worth it.

Go for the 15", once you've got a load of palettes open the screen on the 12" will be way too small. I've got the old 15" and even that's a bit cramped at times but the new one has a higher resolution.

Well the thing is, I don't know if i want to REPLACE the iMac, or just get a 2nd computer. I might take this computer with me to Europe if I find a job there, so I will want to use it as my main computer while i'm there, for sure. I think the 15" sounds pretty good at this point, but the guy in the Apple store said that with 2 monitors, the 12" powerbook can hold your palettes while a 2nd monitor would handle the document area. I'd probably hook up a 2nd monitor to the 15 incher anyways. I use the 17" model at work and at times i wish I had a 2nd monitor on it too, but I think the 17" model is outta my price range. I'm also thinking of buying an iPod with the laptop too.

well... choose! i know i'd regret getting a computer that can only go upto 1024x768

well, you can take the 15" to 2GB of ram where the 12 you can only go to a little over a 1GB. not all apple store guys are right, trust me.

get the 15... no doubt.

i have a 12 powerbook 867 with 640 ram, and it runs photoshop fine. the screen isn't that small, im very happy with it, and the new 12'' laptops are faster and hold more ram. and to top it all its alot more portable and nice looking, but anything more than designing get the highend laptop

15 most definatly.... you need the resoluion and wide screen aspect. And if you are going to be running flash... you need all the power you can get.
Apple Store Deals section has teh 15 inch 1999 powerbook for 1699 referbished at the moment. Their refrebs are pretty much new btw. I just got th 17 inch referb ... for 2199 on thre and i think it is new. Most referbs are computers that never got used or something didnt work when the person first bought it.
It comes with warrenty and you save a bunch.. for something that is new.
Check that out too.
They still have the 17 inch for sale too ;) i love mine

thanks for all the responses. I think i'll go for the 15" powerbook, refurbished if possible. hopefully i'll get some hands-on action with it first if it is refurbished just to make sure there aren't any blemishes on it, and hopefully i'll be able to afford a 15 or 20 gig ipod too. after losing my 5gb ipod in munich this summer, i've noticed that a lot more people out there have ipods than i thought. it is really frustrating to see all these kids with brand new ipods knowing that i could still have mine if i was more careful :(
