If you're replacing a desktop, I would definitely warn against the 12". They're great, but if you're going to REALLY use a computer, you don't want a 12" anything to be your primary machine. The 12" is popular because it's cheaper, and unless you really need all the features that some of the higher-end Macs have, you could easily go for it. Random user #784 may not be a designer or have any "need" for a Mac, but just prefers them, and wants something to type papers and get online with. They could go with a 12". The 12" is portable, another HUGE bonus. I personally own a 17", and while it's still portable in a way, it sucks to carry across a large college campus every day.

The 15" not only has more features, it will make you feel more at home if you're switching over from a 15" iMac. If you're just looking for portability and a second machine, go with the 12". If you're really looking to upgrade to another machine rather than just have a second computer, go with the 15". It's more expensive, but I think in your case, it's definitely worth it.
