I just made my first purchase using iTunes and I'm a little disappointed with the quality of the song.
I figured the bitrate would be at least 192 kbps but it was 128 and noticeably not as clear as the songs I ripped from my collection.
Anyone else notice this?

I think u should try Napster instead.

yeah, i bought a couple of songs from there, and, yes, they're all in 128.
It is kinda weak, but you can get revenge by sharing them.

It's like charging for really compressed jpgs, there's no way I am paying for mp3s other than buying the actual albums.

y'all got punk'd

I thought the itunes store was all AAC encoded? Even though the AAC's are 128kbps they are supposed to sound better than a 192kbps encoded mp3.

Go on then, buy the CD instead. You know, one day, CD format as we know it today will be no more... just like the (higher quality) vinyl once were - similar to how people then bitched about the loss of sound quality of CDs - it's not a matter of will it happen, but when - I say 5 years max, then you'd have no choice but buy your tunes online.
The reason why it's 128kbps (at the moment) is because of bandwidth and HD space, not because they want to compress the crap out of it. When everyone have broadband and fat HDs or when lossless compression gets better, you'll then get a better quality song (larger file size) from these online music stores (for sure).
Right now, if you don't feel the benefit of d/l a single track without getting off your arse or if you have a party and just buy that one track that you don't own - then either buy it from a store or find it on P2P at a higher bitrate - keep in mind though rarely would you find anything higher than 128kbps on P2P.

I always thought Cds were of higher quality than vynel. Being digital and all.
And You can find higher than 128kbps mp3s with some P2P softwares.

its all AAC 128 kbps on the itunes store which is the same as a 192kps mp3. I read somewhere that they're gonna be offering a choice on quality soon. And of course you can get higher than 128kps on p2p!

cd's are not higher quality than vinyl.
vinyl will still be around while cd's are on there way to being obsolete
- Mimio0
Vinyl is already gone. What's the point of vinyl when everything is mastered digitally anyway? Plus, when you find something new on vinyl it's a poor quality pressing.

(ignorant quote of the day)
"cd's are not higher quality than vinyl. "
TaraTara
------------------------ummm.... wha?
if you are speaking of sound fidelity, you are seriously wrong.
if you are speaking of durability, wrong again.in exactly what area are you referring to?
- Tara0
fuck off lambsy
i'm not ignorant- it is ignorant to immediately attack someone who you don't know for merely having a friendly discussioni have not made racist statement, attacked you or anyone on here
you're obviously a complete idiot
end of storyand vinyl will be around a hell of a lot longer than cd's for a reason you fool
- Mimio0
Vinyl might last longer if you don't play it. But, since the sound is produced physically from the vinyl they are wearing out as you play them.
- Tara0
vinyl has a warmer sound which you can't get from cd's
yes they wear out over time
but there is something very special about listening to music from a record
whether it is actually putting the needle on the record or the process of taking it out of the sleeve
you don't get that from a cd
and you can't get that warm sound
i'm not saying cd's are shit sound, they're not
- mrdobolina0
but, that is more opinion than fact.
- Mimio0
I can understand your preference, CDs can sound tinny without a good EQ and sound system.
- lambsy0
hey TaraTara,
you're kind of a bitch aren't you
i'm sorry you felt attacked by my message, but since you really had no clue what you were speaking of, i felt i had to respond.
i really hate it when people make ignorant statements, especially with such authority.
just settin the record straight toots.
by the way - for someone to possess ignorance, they don't have to have made a racist statement or have attacked someone.
have a great day sweetiepie : )

hmmm - y'know - 128 AAC is 44.1 KHZ folks... and uh... being in record pools and getting stuff on CD too - i've noticed the recording industry go waaaay down on some tracks - they bump the levels and are starting to use compressors and limiters more often which depreciate the sound quality - but anyhow -
think of this:
audio is recorded in 44.1 khz
the human ear can't hear frequencies higher than 22 Khz
and most speakers only move air up to 20 Khz.
???? Hey, for 99 Cents - i'll take the few minutes and re-calibrate the EQ
- lucidblack0
oh.. to settle the Vinyl / CD thing - yes CD's are higher quality than vinyl - the only reason why DJ's and designers still use Vinyl (like myself) is
A) the nostalgia
B) most club owners and people like to see a DJ at work - not just pushing play and letting a computer do all the work
you can actualy exert more control of a CD or audio file - but that is just way too boring to look at. :)
