As a graphic designer, I want to learn a new skill... I wanted to know if I should learn 3d or video editing.
Which one would benefit me more in the long run?
Thanks!

3d video editing takes some skill for sure but creatively you will get more from 3d... its harder though

video is pretty close to design skills already acquired just moving to a new medium. 3d is a whole other animal. complex and demanding more rendering time than video editing and compositing. you want to do motion design your already there, you want to do 3d, grab a book and clear your schedule for the next couple of months.
we do maya @ springfield college. a very complex program to learn. maybe 3dsmax is easier to get the hang of:

one of the easiest 3d program is Cinema 4d from http://www.maxon.net
I had lessons on Maya and tried Max, but depending on what you want to do, Cinema 4d really rulez.
see examples on

I'm learning motion graphics and 3d at the same time, it's a bitch, most of the time you'll forget what you've learned just a few months ago
maya is a beast but so much fun when you start to handle it
maya has the best community, free rigs, models and mel scripts everywhere, people share a lot it's insane, not like them motion graphics bastards droping the latest ae trick to impress the rookies haha
anyway learn it all mate

I spent some time in a .com (lot's of free time) learning Carrera Studio. So 3d was the way for me. I was able to add a huge amount to illustration abilities. You can bring all your illustrator artwork into it. I also broadcast the images into flash applications. I guess I've been more web-based.
I'll have to admit that I'm jealous of video effects, after affects, etc. Most of my clients aren't looking for video though. I think of video as my next step. In fact, I've just done some animations to be used in a video documentary.

...master of none.

why not incorporate both

i have done both for $$ and fun since 97 and if you are editing your own footage and putting together your own story, then you can't get anymore creative than that.. Plotting down points and connecting them into polygons and then connecting the polygons to make shapes is not very creative, so if you have something to say and think you have the time to pull it off go with video editing, but if you're not working on your own stuff there is absolutly nothing worse than video editing, but 3D still sucks.

If i was you i'd go for video, and gradually incorporate 3D as you need to.
You can buy a DV camera and start using Premiere and AE making little music videos + films etc. If you've never ever done any 3d work it might be a bit scary and take a while to get anything good going, which means you could lose your keen momentum.

yeah
you sort of need to make your first 1000 mistakes in 3D as one of the people i learned from told me. after that your good.
where as with video. the gratification if somewhat immediate.

3D. seems to be a BIG requirement these days for most broadcast positions. maybe take a course in 3D and then teach yourself After Effects. take a look at SAE institute (worldwide).
