well it's like this:
The Z1 sony is made as a perfect blend of performance, battery life and style. Keep in mind a couple of things when you look at this Sony (they might be something you consider). I agree that there are a lot of PC laptops with better performance then the Sony but when you need to have a solid performing machine for work (and Z1 packs a punch, it's not like it's a slow machine and at 1400x1050 on 14.1" you'll have plenty of workspace), a presentation laptop for client meetings (you look more professional, believe me they will be impressed) with long battery life and a laptop you can take with you anywhere (this applies especially in my case because I travel to Europe and back to US often and I need to get my work with me), Sony is just simply the best deal out there. As DonVitoviti mentioned a Centrino 1.6-1.7 actually perform like P4 3.0Ghz CPUs but with longer battery life, for $2000 after rebates Z1 is not that expensive.

great thread - man I wish I had a couple grand to throw down but I probably can only afford about $1,500. Anyone got any good pointers? I definately want centrino and need USB2, Firewire port, and 60GB HD min...

Jevad... Compaq lines have never failed me, and they come with everything you need. And they're cheap.
- jevad0

I'll have a lookie!

Here's what I got about a month ago and love it:
http://products.gateway.com/prod…I did my research ahead of time and came up with a great laptop!

please god, someone tell me why people are interested in huge notebooks????
if you want a massive, heavy, thick system with a big monitor, buy a desktop.
if you want a portable solution that also works well at home as a desktop, buy a monitor and a docking station.
if you *think* you need a massive notebook screen to show off pretty work to clients, you don't. clients don't give a shit as long as the work is good.
if you continue to *think* you need a large display to show off work, drop the cash on a small, cheap projector.
i just don't get it. it defies logic. buying/making a *portable* computer that takes up more space and weighs as much as my desktop.
please, someone give me a viable reason for the choice.
i bought a notebook so i could take it with me easily. so i could work on the road...so i could work at lunch at the coffee house, at the pub when i'm enjoying a beer...i have a desktop to do work on at home. i don't want to lug 6 pounds of computer around with me through airports and to bars. i don't need a 17" monitor taking up my precious lugage/bag space nor my pub table drinking space.
it just baffles me. 15" should be the biggest notebook sold.
- jevad0
what did you get sparker?
I just want it to use around the house when I get home networking - and to take to clients...
- sparker0
i vowed i would never purchase a gateway system...but i recanted when i played with this at a friends house.
http://products.gateway.com/prod…
.95" thick.
14.1" screen...i up'd the ram and hd on my own...but the system is decent stock.
although, mine runs gentoo linux, not windows.
before that i was a faithfull ibm thinkpad 600x user. small, protable, hard case.
:)
if i had the money i would have purchased the 12" powerbook to run linux on...but it was a bit more than what i paid for the gateway system (i have connections).
- sparker0
note, this still weighs a bit more than i like. but you don't get much lighter than 4 pounds....with all the hardware that goes into systems now.
- jevad0
that looks quite sweet - thanks...
- sparker0
i'm very picky about notebooks.
i look for several things when buying...strength of display casing is one of the key features.
if you can grab the display and twist it and see *waves* in the screen...it is too weak for me.
:)
this one is actually built pretty solid...and it has metal accents (logo, powerbutton, extra buttons and caps)...so it's nice and elegant in a simple way.
the only downside is the lack of a badass video card...but, hey, not many notebooks have those anyway.
- brundlefly0
oohhh so sweet
- brundlefly0
bigger better

That looks like something you would buy at toys'r'us :)
I have a sony vaio with the 16" screen. Nice/fast enough for what I use it for.

I bought this one about a month ago:

Works awesome for any type of development aside from monster video and photoshop files. The built in wireless is nice too.
