I'm mostly doing photoshop and illustrator work on it - large file sizes. But also I hope to get into After Effects more so video stuff as well.
I decided to switch because every job I'm going for uses macs and I dunno how to use them - crap reason I know!

Which machine are you looking at? The G4 is always nice, but it sounds like an iMac would be sufficient for what your doing...what ever your do, don't go through the apple loan thing.

oh good. What kind do you think I would need for graphics and video work? That fancy one that looks like a lamp is pretty expensive.

Thanks for the advice b_magallanes, cheers

excellent photography louise.
if you're wanting to do after effects type stuff and heavy artworking you will needat the very least a high-end G4....

oh dear
the hard thing is that they ARE expensive.
so here's my -.2
i own a dual 867 G4 with 1.5 gigs of ram and os X. i did some videoprojects on it (use final cut pro, it's good) and it worked fast enough for me. (2nd monitor necessary) maybe a eMac would serve your needs in price and extras?

wait until after Steve Jobs Keynote speech today at 12noon EST at Macworld

this is where the new stuff for the year may be announced. the rumor is Dual 3Ghz G5's and most likly if that is true a price cut on the older stuff!

Thanks for that pascii and for the nice comment jevad!

an emac could be a good idea if your on a budget. decent specs, decent size monitor, decent price new.

In general, if you wait for apple to release a new product they always slash prices on the previously fastest machine. that is the best way to get a good deal. And apple gives educational discounts if you or a loved one is a teacher/student.

at least a G4. i'm still on a 400Mhz G4 and it suits me just fine. although faster is always better but that equals more costs. my next machine would prolly not be a G5 but a G4 with a dual processor since they are cheaper. i wouldn't go for the new machines because they are too expensive, prices drop fast, especially when they release a new machine. allright, make sure you have plenty of ram (very important) 256MB is the absolut minimum. but double that to make it more comfortable. and most important: display. my advice would be to not buy an lcd or plasma screen because they aren't that accurate when it comes to colours. and that is really important for print work. sony trinitron's are really good but too expensive. any crt with either a trinitron (e.g. sony) or an diamondtron tube (e.g. lacie, iiyama pro) are good. don't budget on the screen. the bigger, the better. really believe me. i switched from an 19" to a 22" and i'm a really happy boy.
