With Zeldman on Apple, it should work well and be easy to use. As long as it doesn't end up looking like a goddamned blog with serifs, curly Qs, and pictures of pet cats all over the place.

Oi vay, Maca, I'm not insulting Zeldman's expertise--I'm insulting his design sensibility. We all know he is #1 in web development; he's just not quite a designer.

"Oi vay, Maca, I'm not insulting Zeldman's expertise--I'm insulting his design sensibility. We all know he is #1 in web development; he's just not quite a designer. "
So what's the point? Everybody knows he's not a graphic designer, he's a web designer, there's a difference if you don't know that.
Now, NT must give something like an assesment test in order to provide people with an user name, at least 2 months of web education.

So Zeldman's design sensibility bothers Cadillac? And this equates to him not rating Zeldman as a designer? Maybe if Cadillac had a URL link under his personal settings we could judge if his design sensibility merits him being a designer!

..but Cadillac isn't the subject of discussion.

"#1 in web development; he's just not quite a designer"
http://Bullshit - Zeldman is opening up a whole new era of web design with what he's doing using css and table-less layouts....
It's just not YOUR idea of what design is, so you're quick to slag him off. Get a clue.
Different strokes for different folks.

he's doing alot more to encourage standards with his design than these guys..

Three things:
1) Saying someone isn't a designer because you don't like their 'design sensiblity' is a small step up from some bogus client saying his wife doesn't like the logo you just did.
2) So what if someone's design style doesn't suit your liking. That's hardly a qualifier for whether the person is a designer or not. I may not dig Monet, but that doesn't mean he's not a painter.
3) Why shit on somebody who has given a lot of himself and that many people have been inspired by?

Next thing you're gonna be saying is that Douglas Bowman is a flake...

Zeldman is a brilliant designer for the web, it seems most webdesigners today want to design the next 2advanced clone. But the fact remains that most of the times the information, which is the reason the user went to the site, is very hard to find and blurred by tons of graphics and eyecandy only designers themself kick on. Instead Zeldman tries to present the information as clear as possible without making it as boring as Nielsen does.

Interesting discussion, which I think more than anything else highlights the deficiency of the term "designer" when applied to web efforts. I think both sides of the argument here are actually valid, but arguing cross-purposes. I think it's difficult to argue that Jeffrey is one of the key leaders in articulating a best-practices approach to web design, from methodology to philosophy. Every web designer has benefited from his work, and his understanding of the factors that impact web design is unsurpassed. His noteworthy strategies, work on standards, and amazing energy and willingness to share his insights should not go unappreciated. All that said, I'm not sure it elevates his studio to a place where Happy Cog is above any criticism on aesthetics, layout, composition, or style --- and I'd wager he'd agree. In the end, things should still look great, no?

Who is Zeldman? Who cares... His sites text handling, for example, is crap and hard to read... What tosh :P

There is no point of this discussion really... he is not a graphic designer, never claimed to be, and most likely doesn't want to be. His site is "designed" to function properly and offer content- CONTENT- the real purpose of a web site after all. It's "face" is almost irrelivant. That's like a graphic designer or web developer with a video link on their site and yappin' that they ain't no director.

well done chumley -

Radio, Z is a self-described "web designer" and creative director at his studio, Happy Cog. You're correct in noting that he's better known as the author of 'Designing with Web Standards' and creator of A List Apart (google 'em people). If you're an HTML (not Flash) designer and haven't read his book then you should.
