Is it just me or is Zeldman a bad designer?
Yes, he is indeed the grand-daddy of web standards and the untouchable validation king but his design sensibility bothers me. His work just seems kind of gimicky. Maybe it's all those obvious photoshop filters.

link please?

http://www.zeldman.com
http://www.happycog.comWow, I'm surprised you don't know of Zeldman.
I don't think he's unusually worse than any other bad designers, it's just that he's an internet celebrity and seems to boast of his work a bit.

i dont like things which start with "the definitive.."
when not meant ironic, they are nothing special mostly.

if i am not mistaken zeldman & Happy cog won the job for redesigning Apple.com

I suspect they are only on board to keep them inline with web standrards... nasty job but someone has to do it.

If you read your own link you'll notice that they won't actally be doing any design. Just standards.
- Jnr_Madison0
Ahhh you beat me to it...

It takes more wit to design with standards then to design with a WYSIWYG editor.
http://www.csszengarden.com/?css…Zeldman may not be Josh Davis but he definitely isnt a bad designer. Hes designing with far more constraints than the average design job.
Is one way better than the other? I couldnt say, but I definitely say zeldman is highly skilled.

Zeldman isn't that bad... But the uber god (in my opinion) of bad/boring design would have to be jakob nielson.
His site is so dry no one stays to see what he has to say. Hey nielson its 2004, not 1995.
Screw usability and pay a graphic designer to work on your Web site you cheap bastard.

jakob isn't a designer...and I doubt he cares to be...never said he was one...
and I really doubt that Zeldman would classify himself as a true graphic designer....more of a web designer.
Shut up and stop hating - the man has done more for the web in recent years than you even know...

actually, i believe he's more of a print designer gone web.
I've never heard any claims of his incredible design prowess. I think most of his respect comes from his technical expertise in applying old design concepts to the 'new' design world.
He's carried that torch and then taken it further than the browsers have.

threads like this make me realize that these design discussion forums are just filled with inexperienced design kids.

"I think most of his respect comes from his technical expertise in applying old design concepts to the 'new' design world. "
Indeed...think you may be right about him doing print before too, in which case I stand corrected!

Zeldman is incredably highly skilled and a web pioneer beyond measure.
Good designer, however, he is not. I find his design sensibility pretentious and gimicky.

he comes across as quite a sassy gal to me.

"threads like this make me realize that these design discussion forums are just filled with inexperienced design kids."
Then what are you doing here, design_slave?
- unknown0
recycle, where else would an inexperienced design kid go? (:

Well, if you look at the guy as a marvel in vector graphics overlapping a flash movie, flipping in incoherent actions of poorly coded applications, no, he's not the guy.
The guy is brilliant, when you look at it, and when you look at simple CSS only design, you really see the beauty of the net, how is supposed to be, information in a clean concise manner, supported and display equal by any device, hardware or software used to browse and catalogue the information on the internet.
It's usability over obstructive design, in that sense, Cadillacs are dead, Volvos shine!
