What the f*ck is up with this software? Files and scripts that work fine in Flash 5 and MX don't work in 2004, going through the actionscript and doing Check Syntax doesn't reveal anything wrong so the only option is to learn AS2.0 from scratch, great.
Oh, and Publish doesn't work if I'm publishing an html file with the swf, it just handily crashes Flash.
Grrrrrrr.

Is this for Mac or PC?
- tomkat0
let me guess -- mac!?
- dstlb0
Yeah Mac, but I do get a nice looking computer for my troubles
:/

From what I hear, Macromedia slacks on the mac versions of just about anything... but especially flash...
- unfittoprint0
2 big mistakes: rushed development and making 2 [standard/pro] versions for the sake of the almighty $$$.
Turning its syntax closer to other scripting languages may be a good thing, but when badly done results in multiple uncompatiblities for the developer [or designer].
A sign of things to come? 1 big updater only after 1 month of release [ http://macromedia.com/support/fl… ]. I really these doesn't become a similar XP, with weekly updates to cover a poorly tested OS.

glad i didnt try and make the switch..
- tomkat0
i was wondering, anyway..
unfit, what do you think about as2.0??
- unfittoprint0
it's more similar to other scripting languages [namely java and c++], one will be able to make a more easy transition between one platform to another.
Separation of content and design should essential for a project's flexibility, making your life easier either if you're a designer, a developer or both. OOP [object oriented programming] should always be taken in consideration when developing in MX's actionscript or it 2.0 version [altough this last one is much more powerful].
Unfortunately, incompatibilities make the transition a pain.
Don't stress. Wait until this come out and then start the more complex stuff...

alright, thanks..

Cheers Unfit, I'll get that one when it comes out.

as usual, unfit is the man...
Are there any other "upgrade essential" books out there that don't just focus on AS, but give a nice overview of JUST the new features?

Usually, when I have a uncommon problem that isn't documented on messageboards elsehwere I think to myself "Well, maybe I could try reinstalling it because this doesn't seem common"
Oh OH
and if it's not pirated - call Macromedia support where they will tell you to . . . reinstall it.also, fix all of your permissions in applications> utilities> disk utility
- dstlb0
Rant retracted (in part)... fixing permissions seems to have cured the Publish crash problem. Cheers for the reminder Cinder, should have thought of that, doh.

Just had to add a comment to this thread (couldn't resist). I installed the demo version of flash mx 2004 and on my PBG4 867/768MB RAM it just feels sooooo slugish. I'm glad to say that i deleted it all and am back with good old Flash MX and it works like a dream under panther. loads in about 3 seconds and feels much much more responsive.
ahh... glas i got that off my chest

seeee????
- brundlefly0
flash pro loads in 6 secs off a G4 1 gig pbook....
not so sluggish

Here's my problem.
KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS DON"T WORK ANYMORE.
I'm on a Mac, 10.3.2, Pro version, not cracked (at work). I'm having the same problem at home.
Things like Command-option-c to copy frames never works.

Anyone else have problems with Actionscripts written in 5 and MX not working if it's saved as a MX2004 file?
- rabattski&rabattski0
yep. on mac *and* pc (no difference there). 2004 is really not worth it at this point (untill they fixed that).
