I guess it all comes down to is how smoothly can you make it happen on your own site?
There are a couple PHP scripts around [hotscripts.com has some] where paypal can be integrated right into your sites existing design, cart and all.
I'm in the same boat you are in: why invest any cash into a solution when there are free ones to implement. Should I start making some cash okay, i'll upgrade.
UP TO YOU sushi, just depends how smooth your move is....

i've used paypal to buy and sell as expensive as $6000. It's one of the better ways to do it online.

how much does paypal charge to use it's services? how much does madmerch charge?

we've been building a custom back-end for our site Jewelboxing and have been using only PayPal while we get that set up. It works great but has a few limitaions. You pay 2.9% on transcactions and can get that down to 2.2 if you do enough business.
- ********0
The 2.9% is sure enough a bummer, but you do receive a the knowledge that your customer knows the transaction is being handled correctly. Nice site Jim - cool product, I hope things go well.
Affiliate programs and adsense can generate a little cash, sometimes alot, but selling your own shit like Jim is the way to go.
sushi if you have something to sell I would go for it right away.
- design_slave0
2.9% seems okay to me. unless your selling a lot of merch, it doesn't make sense to pay for a custom e-commerce engine.
- JimCoudal0
2.9 isn't terrible and 2.2 is pretty good, considering that's flat rate for all cards. Amex is usually more than that and Visa usually a bit less, so it evens out. Ppl who are buying our cases tend to be fairly sophisticated internet users and PP is quick and simple for them but I do wonder how many ppl don't buy because they don't wanna set up a PP account.

that's nice

My site and product Loopkit CD-ROM uses PayPal only and I manage to sell 3 to 4 a day. PayPal processing allows you to also choose external method of paying, ex. CC. If you go to http://www.loopkit.com and go all the way through the BUY NOW process (you don't have to purchase it) you will see the end result of being taken to an external page. Check it. It will make perfect sense to you. :)

btw: PayPal works in 38 countries and if a customer is somewhere that's not on the list, they're SOL.
- ********0
not to be a prick. that's not true. there is an option to pay with a CC if they want to.
- JimCoudal0
Nicely integrated, whatcha using for packaging the CD?
- ********0
Digipak, hang on I will show it to you roughly
- JimCoudal0
i meant SOL for using PayPal by just typing a pass to purchase. sorry if i didn't make it clear
