"it cost me $1000. to get it fixed."
ha! i could have fixed it for you for between $50-$200. give or take. it always just depends on how much parts are going for at the time.

mitsu, can you fix mine? I have the same problem as evad and also my clasp broke as well.
Do you think I can fake it and say it cracked on it's own and use my apple care?
- piperboytoy0
Yes I have apple care but I don't think it covers external damages.
i hung my computer in a bag on a hanger with my winter coat and the bag slipped and fell on the bottom of the closet. I heard the crack too.
Now my heart is broken :<

if it boots up, then you have nothing to worry about. i've put a few broken ones together with much more that just cosmetic damage.

hehe spantanious crackation

I will wear all black until my computer if fixed. Thanks for your concerns.

i should note, that most of my experience is with the ti powerbooks and i'm not too knowledgeable on the new ones.
at any rate it really depends on how the hinge was broken. if it requires pulling the lcd cover off, i wouldn't touch it for the price of a new one... those lcd covers bend way too easy!
if you could somehow get some pictures of it, i might be able to tell you what you'll need to fix it.

thanks Mitsu,
I hope I can discribe to you. The hinge attaching to the screen came off. So it doesn't turn at all. I can still close my book, but the one site doesn't meet the keyboard.
Mine is not the aluminum one but the Ti book. It doesn't look like there's a lot of damage to the hinge tho.
Also the outer rim of the keyboard is slightly cracked as with the clasp that closes the book.
Thanks Mighty Mitsu for your great wisdom!!!!!!!

This story makes me sick. I have one too. I would cry my ass off if that happened.
And where would I be without my ass?
- mitsu0
ok, hopefully only hinge is damaged, because they aren't really cheap. if so here's a guy selling a pair for $200.00 USD:

more hinges:

Shit thats like dropping a baby!!
- mitsu0
as for the case itself:
if you own a 400 or 500:

550 or 667:

they are different and some parts don't work with others so make sure you get the right one.

crap!
dang mitsu, i'm calling you next time :)hopefully there is no next time...

OMG thanks for your help Mitsu. You're the best.

if apple care doesn't cover it, keep an eye out on ebay for replacement parts. some people part out their macs if a major component, too costly to fix, stops working or breaks.... kind of like your situation.
or you could just do the same and sell it. you'd be surprised how much people would pay for a broken g4...

My G4 15" fell off an airport security table (in a bag) Now I see the surface to the right of the trackpad is bowed up a bit in the corner... Is there an easy fix?
- kerus0
apple doesnt cover case damages.
i got a brand new G4 with broken hingles and it wouldnt stay closed. i had to put a carabeener in the security tab in back to make it stay shut. BRAND NEW mind you - "we dont warantee case damages and you cannot prove it arrived in that state"
grumble.
- mitsu0
unfortunatley, not. pulling out the motherboard and all attached components is very difficult and you can actually see the board bend as you try to pull it out.
if the damage isn't that bad, i'd just leave it alone or take it to a certified apple repair technician as they are liable for any further damage.
- mitsu0
sorry, got ahead of myself. the reason you'd need to do this is to replace the top part of the laptop case. this is of course assuming that it can't be bent back into shape - and most cannot.

just contacted Lufthansa to see if they wil pay for repair... (their X-Ray belt pushed my bag off the end of the table)
