you can see some pics of my g4's midway through fixing them in the thread 'broken powerbook pics'
some advice: take your time when taking these machines apart! they are delicate and it's best to just set aside an entire afternoon or evening to working on them. get yourself a set of torx bits and a small torx screwdriver. here's the one i got. it's the best tool for the job as it doesn't provide too much leverage causing stripped screws! home depot carries this exact set, if you have one in your area.

apple doesnt cover case damages.
i got a brand new G4 with broken hingles and it wouldnt stay closed. i had to put a carabeener in the security tab in back to make it stay shut. BRAND NEW mind you - "we dont warantee case damages and you cannot prove it arrived in that state"
grumble.

OMG thanks for your help Mitsu. You're the best.

as for the case itself:
if you own a 400 or 500:

550 or 667:

they are different and some parts don't work with others so make sure you get the right one.

ok, hopefully only hinge is damaged, because they aren't really cheap. if so here's a guy selling a pair for $200.00 USD:

thanks Mitsu,
I hope I can discribe to you. The hinge attaching to the screen came off. So it doesn't turn at all. I can still close my book, but the one site doesn't meet the keyboard.
Mine is not the aluminum one but the Ti book. It doesn't look like there's a lot of damage to the hinge tho.
Also the outer rim of the keyboard is slightly cracked as with the clasp that closes the book.
Thanks Mighty Mitsu for your great wisdom!!!!!!!

i should note, that most of my experience is with the ti powerbooks and i'm not too knowledgeable on the new ones.
at any rate it really depends on how the hinge was broken. if it requires pulling the lcd cover off, i wouldn't touch it for the price of a new one... those lcd covers bend way too easy!
if you could somehow get some pictures of it, i might be able to tell you what you'll need to fix it.

hehe spantanious crackation

mitsu, can you fix mine? I have the same problem as evad and also my clasp broke as well.
Do you think I can fake it and say it cracked on it's own and use my apple care?
- evad0
crap!
dang mitsu, i'm calling you next time :)hopefully there is no next time...

"it cost me $1000. to get it fixed."
ha! i could have fixed it for you for between $50-$200. give or take. it always just depends on how much parts are going for at the time.

i dropped mine a while ago getting out of a cab, broke the hinge. would have cost $1700 to fix.. or $2100 for a new one. I got me a new one. Damn i was pissed, thank god my company let me expense it and use the older one as a backup drive. You can just hook it up to an external monitor as well.
good luck

some guy at a hotel dropped mine, i checked it out, and the hinge was cracked a bit, but it seemed fine otherwise.
so i let it go.about a month later, the hinge cracked some more, a wire stuck out, and it pinched the wire. and my screen went black.
it cost me $1000. to get it fixed.

is it the ti or the newer al model?

just contacted Lufthansa to see if they wil pay for repair... (their X-Ray belt pushed my bag off the end of the table)
- mitsu0
sorry, got ahead of myself. the reason you'd need to do this is to replace the top part of the laptop case. this is of course assuming that it can't be bent back into shape - and most cannot.
- mitsu0
unfortunatley, not. pulling out the motherboard and all attached components is very difficult and you can actually see the board bend as you try to pull it out.
if the damage isn't that bad, i'd just leave it alone or take it to a certified apple repair technician as they are liable for any further damage.

My G4 15" fell off an airport security table (in a bag) Now I see the surface to the right of the trackpad is bowed up a bit in the corner... Is there an easy fix?
- mitsu0
if it boots up, then you have nothing to worry about. i've put a few broken ones together with much more that just cosmetic damage.
- piperboytoy0
sorry but my digital camera isn't compatiable with my mac so I can't get any pics of my broken computer.
I still feel like kicking myself. I should have never brought my computer out yesterday, as I didn't need it at all. Fuck this sucks ass.
