Well I am a very amateur photographer. Been shooting for a few months with a Canon G3 and thought it was time to step up to a digital SLR and pursue my passion to the next level.
I recently bought this:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/…I know nothing about photography, and need to pick up my first lens for the camera. Could someone recommend lenses to me? Also any resources, tips, etc that a would help a newbie. Thanks a lot.

PS
Some of my photos, in case the type of shots help you suggest a lens.

I don't have advice for lenses, but we have two things in common. I bought a 10D this year. I also took a picture that opens my site that looks like the shot you have that opens yours:

You're going to love your camera. I had lenses already from my EOS Rebel 35mm.

Dude.
just help a bud (a once pro photog) go thru the process of buying one. the camera is kick ass. we've been focking around yesterday and today, trying to suss it out . He got a Canon EF - Zoom lens - 17 mm - 40 mm - wide angle. Seems to fo the trick.Congrats.

Thanks for your comments, glad you guys like the camera. I picked up the Sigma 17-35mm F2.8 EX Aspherical HSM Lens to test out. Any expericence with this lens, or knowlege if it is right for me, or the best buy would be great. Where is Carty?

The 10D is a brilliant camera.
disadvantage of the sigma lenses is that the lightmeter doesnt work very well in the P and Av program mode. It fucks up the image with about one and a half stop. Thats a bit too much. On the other hand are the Canon lenses really expen$ive.I wouldnt buy a wide angle if youre starting out with photography. You'll learn more buying a 50mm , you can buy some a reaally good second hand one for no money, say 50mm/1.4 for about 100 Euros. Or go for a zoom like 28 - 125.
Try not to overdo it with expensive equipment in the beginning. And most important... enjoy that camera.
This has been my baby for years.
Its 17 years old and used to belong to my father, still kicks ass.

Well my understanding is that lenses act different on a digital versus 35 mm, because the chip is a different size then the 35mm, so it was suggested that a sligtly wider angle lens would be best. Maybe this is false.

Very nice pictures, man..
I think that the most important lens to have is a 50mm no-zoom lens with the best (i miss the english word.. 1.8 or 1.4 light-strength..) performance..
but thats just my 0.02$

--> get fixed lenses. cheaper and always higher quality.
obviously there's the intrigue of getting a macro lense, but a year from now you'll be kicking yourself.
as for the pics you're trying to achieve...don't get a wide angle. i think you'll be very dissapointed. you'd be best with extension tubes on a classic 55 or 80mm lense, or to go with something in the 180mm+ for those effects.
right now i'd reccommend buying a lot of fixed lenses with f-stops below 2.8 if you can afford it...
are you convinced you want to go digital?

Dude its so not fair that you are just beginning and have such a kick ass camera ;)

nice pictures man.
I agree with s.o. says : I would go with a 50mm at f1.4, f1.8 even new there are not "very" expensive, on a DSLR you'll get same angle of view of a +/-80mm on a SLR. You'll get a very good lense for portrait use.
good site but no lenses reviews:see also http://www.photosig.com/

you are right there is a factor for most digital cameras which alters the field of view of the lens for your camera it is 1.6x the focal length, so a 35mm should be around a 50mm if you get my drift.
that's my understanding of it anyway

starting out i would agree with everyone who said get a 50mm, or something fixed that's similar. the wide aperture would let u go crazy with all ur low light stuff
better to get a nice, quiet, fixed canon lens than a rancid 17-2000mm sigma that bends verticals like a bitch
