Tracing cheating?

Ok, this is a piece of art that I made last spring using a plasma cutter. The gorilla image is a tracing from some photo then photo copied, scanned and then printed out, spray mounted to an old screen door panel and the cut out with the plasma cutter.
Would I claim I drew the gorilla? No. Did I create art? Yes.
I guess my problem with this vector tracing thing is when people who trace photos then claim they are illustrators. (and I don't mean you brooke, you spicy little bezier beauty...).
Taking a photo, tracing the silhouette and filling it with a gradient does not make you an illustrator. A Graphic Designer, yes.

But what about the rights of the photographer? When you make an illy file from a photo, does or should the photographer get a cut? If you change it a little, it'll be hard to prove what photo it was taken from. Is that ethical? How do photographers feel about this?
