THERE ARE NO RULES MAKING YOUR ART, FOOLS!
There is no such thing as 'cheating'!
Is the International Design Police going to arrest you if you traced your image! Do they even care? It is the concept not the method.
If you saw some Brooke vector art and you were inspired to make your own are you copying her even if you didn't trace an image?
The real cheating is having an unoriginal idea and make ANOTHER DAMN VECTOR ILLUSTRATION LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!
This has got to be the most ridiculous thread I've ever read.
On that note, I must ask: is Andy Warhol a cheater?

i couldnt disagree more.... there are so many artists out there that 'trace' and give a lil extra sumfin to make it their own......
- Recycle0
But that's how art progresses. Duchamp didn't pull cubism out of his ass.

Oh wait...I agree with Pepe. Misunderstood his post.

I guess unless you are a vector artist you will not understand what it takes...

well then how come i can't take a screenshot of something and throw some filters on it?

some of the vector aritsts i know can sketch better than most people can take a photograph, but I think for the really high end vectoring, a reference is essential, as the amount of detail work involved would never beable to be done "live".
Just like in any medium, some people will bring it to the next level, and some people will just copy. With the advent of digital cameras(I.E. point and shoot and you will at east get a very well exposed, clear image) , it seems everyone is a photographer, and this subject is also up for debate, but again, it's what you do to make it your own that counts.

Well said, Timajick.

Hey ladies, I'm not saying tracing is such a bad thing, I do it myself. I just can't stand it when Graphic Designers who trace's a photograph then try's to pass themselves off as an "Illustrator". No, you are a tracer.
And most of you suck a tracing!
Now Brooke on the other hand has skills most of you kids will never ever come close to. What that girl can do with a gradient mesh gets me fluttery and I drop my pants and then....
.....never mind.

Even the old master's used whatever device was around to create their works__the camera Lucina

well.. are you guys talking about hand-tracing or "auto" tracing? while i wouldn't do either (that is besides the point though, really), it seems as if you guys really don't have a problem with that either. so why bother hand-trace at all?

*turns on French accent*
*ahem*
Abby, I want to make love to you...

An illustration is basically a collection of marks, made by the movement of the hand, either using a pen or mouse (for example).
The difference between an average illustration and a great illustration depends on what marks the artist decides to include/lay down on the surface.
Whilst the idea of 'tracing' seems mechanical...'cheating'...it still requires a thought process to determine an end result.

If a client asked me to trace an image, I would do it and wouldnt think twice about any of you design nazis.
- pepe0
there really arent any rules to this game, its all so subjective to begin with, might as well not limit yourself to, 'am i cheating cuz i traced'.... go for it and dont look back
- mrdobolina0
plus, the people on NT are such a slight millionth of a percentage of the population, it doesnt matter anyway.

I actually don't trace photos... I trace models themselves... I get a model and place her near my pc, then trace the edges of her body with a wacom tablet and done!
I've lots my tablet a few times when I get near the groin area... tricky stuff!

very cheeky Mick.
