Whether good or bad, from clients or colleagues, how do you deal with criticism?
A good designer puts their heart and soul into their designs so regardless of who you are or how long you've been in this industry, it still breaks you heart a little when a concept is rejected.

Sometimes its like getting kicked in the nads. Other times, you try your hardest to reason with their opinion, suck up the pride, and keep ahn truckin'.

Better that they tell you the cold hard truth.
That way, the next time, you can figure out what is "right" and what is "wrong."
The worst profs I've had in Uni are the ones that give zero input. How am I supposed to improve myself if I don't really know what I did wrong?
Hmm... I suppose that doesn't really answer the question, "how do you deal with criticism?"
I guess it's just something you get used to. Filter out the nonsensical comments from the important ones.
It's better than ignoring everyones suggestions, and then evolving into a prideful designer, whose girlfriend ends up sleeping with his bestfriend on prom night.

take only constructive critic serious.
and remind
if you ever listen to all people who tell you this and that about your work and what you should do -
you'll never get there you want

always find the positive in someone's work. negative criticism rarely does good for the party being critiqued.
I agree with pascii. don't listen to everyone.

suck it up, we are designers, no ones life is on the line from what we do day to day, have fun!
Ask me again on tuesday, and it will all change though.

In so far as clients are concerned its their brand and they know whats best. They are number one in the process. The more you try to take control they wont be happy unless they have no ideas and you are making it up together with them.
The best advice I give is to take their comments very seriously and then formulate a way to circle it back to your idea still making them beleive that its their thoughts or ideas that have changed the design for the better. And you still walk away owning the work. Makes all parties happy. The more you can say "Hey Mr. Client - thats a really great idea - but based on your thoughts - this idea will make it extremely successful." the more they will value your advice and understanding of your trade.

"always find the positive in someone's work. negative criticism rarely does good for the party being critiqued."
I'm going to have to slightly disagree with that. I think if you're not honest, and put the foot down on someones design by stating out the inherent errors, they aren't necessarily going to realize how to improve the fluency/communication.
No doubt, positive comments are nice, yet I find that they can be someone unconstructive in the nature of improving ones design.
I can imagine many people are going to disagree with me.

Totally agree with you 071183.
I have always found that starting out with the negatives allows the positives to all show through. If you start the other way you will get stuck on whats good and try to save it without recognizing that the bad parts need attention.
Yeah i have been fairly harsh here on the boards but mainly the reason being that those words hopefully stick in someones head to pay attention to. As a designer you need to listen to the negatives and attack them quick. If you dont you will remain in a shell and clients will state that you are unbearable and pompous.

My inability to tolerate criticism makes me want to pull the plug and go work at the airport.
