better yet, how do you decide between cristism from a client who knows nothing about art or their brand (start-ups) and fighting for a design you know is better than their ideas.
Don't you have to stick up for your ideas if you know you're right?

good question...and I think that as a designer it's our job to help clients understand their brand. I'm finding that the best part of my job isn't sitting in front of my computer, scheming up comps, but sitting down with the client and helping them understand their brand.
I'm always surprised that most small businesses don't seem to get it...I mean isn't this something you're supposed to pound out in a business plan? But most don't and I become an integral partner in helping them achieve their goals. If you can get that kind of trust with a client before sitting down to design for them, you are 3/4 the way there.

in terms of usibility, i can get quite defensive, but i try to swallow my pride and accept the crit with an open mind. after all, what's intuitive for one isn't necessarily intuitive for all.
on more abstact work, however, i could really care less as i'm doing work that i like and enjoy, and i'm doing it for myself. that type of work defines who i am, and no one can tell you who you are/aren't.
