ok, i have never been as stoked on music shopping or library management till itunes for pc.
but, i just made my first album purchases from the store and there all .m4p wtf? this AAC thing has got me all locked in to apple.
(i probably wont go outside apple products for music now, but i want to have choices when building up my music library. and investing the dogh.)

if you're that worried about it, burn it to a disk, then rip it again into a more open format.

yeah, but that defeats the whole purpose.
we will see what format napster provides. if its wma im not going near it. if its mp3 i will consider moving.

the aac files sound considerably better than the mp3s, especially in situations where your high end would be a bit knocked out... also, it's not like it's an "apple media file" or something...

it would be an apple format if they are the only ones to use it...

napster will be a wma service:

yeah, i was pretty upset it was m4p format. I wanted to use it in my little samsung yepp mp3 player. I tried burning an audio cd and ripping it again but it won't recognize my yamaha burner. I have an mp3 cd player in my car too, but again, i can't burn an mp3 cd.
does anyone know if there's a m4p to mp3 converter?

AAC is a standard. Don't bust on Apple for using it. Bust on the companies that make your iPod wannabe's for not supporting standards and supporting Microsofts format.
At least you have the option to burn and rip it again.
And remember, the only files with DRM are the ones you purchase...anything you rip into AAC is just like having an mp3...only it's better quality, and most electronics don't support it yet.

you dont even have to burn it to a cd.. just burn it to the harddrive :)
cd image.

I will knock apple for using some gay format. what is the purpose of having a file if it wont play on any other devices? might as well buy the cd.

.mp4 is a nice format, but all my audio software (acid, soundforge etc) doesnt support it yet so Im sticking with mp3 for now, but acc is a more treble concouis

Roxio Toast converts AAC files, not sure what the PC equivlent to Toast is but I'm sure it will too!

AAC's full name is MPEG-4 Audio, developed by Dolby / Sony etc. it's a open codac as long as you pay the license fee.
WMA is proprietry from MS, if that's not locking in I don't know what is???
as someone said, only the files you buy from the iTMS has DRM just like more and more CDs these days with copy-protection when you get it from your local music shop, so your convinience of CD ripping days will not last forever - so you might as well get used to the instant-gratification than actually owning something physical
