AAC's full name is MPEG-4 Audio, developed by Dolby / Sony etc. it's a open codac as long as you pay the license fee.
WMA is proprietry from MS, if that's not locking in I don't know what is???
as someone said, only the files you buy from the iTMS has DRM just like more and more CDs these days with copy-protection when you get it from your local music shop, so your convinience of CD ripping days will not last forever - so you might as well get used to the instant-gratification than actually owning something physical
