Anyone work for/with web "technologists" and find that they dislike working w/Flash assets?
- jpea0
i personally hate it when i'm talking to someone about what i do (because they asked) and they say "ah, i don't like all that flash stuff... it's too much".
it makes me feel like my work is all the same and i'm being grouped into a sector that houses some kid who got flashmx off of kazaa.
i wish people could realize that flash can mean VERY different things. not just lame, huge, badly laid out sites that have no purpose and are "flashy" just because they think things have to move all over.

show'em some 20 harcoded actionscript printed pages, they'll see how 'dull' and 'technic' this baby can be.
- unknown0
i don`t think they`ll get the shit
they never do
btw , can we now save single flash pages in or disk so we don't have to go through the same lame ass animations
- JamesEngage0
i think we've 'turned the corner' when it comes to flash now... there is a lot of good stuff out there.
- jpea0
hey engage, what happened to your old name?
- JamesEngage0
if you don't know, I'm not telling you.
- jpea0
i take it that it happened last night.. didn't think you were the one that spouted off though;-)
- JamesEngage0
I didn't really... BASTARDS!
- JamesEngage0
good luck with createclear mr peacock by the way.
- jpea0
thank you much sir... how might you have known perhaps?

Alright, I know the thread us dying down, but I had to put in my 2 cents.
I frequent a chat room. A web design room. And though one would think to find designers chatting, there are, that almost synonymous other species, web developers abound.
You know them, the Linux-lovers, the ones with a Sparc fetish, love Server Side Scripting and Database Normalization.
They all hate flash. Some won't even install flash on their machines, making proving their cries of "All flash sites suck" all the more difficult. Some see the scripters of flash as kiddies, and the general "Flash doesn't act like my browser and HTML" shit is spewed.
It's really annoying, because I enjoy doing a lot of flash stuff and would rather not be mocked by my Information Superhighway construction worker brothers.

I work for an Art Director who is pro-publishing/print and anti-pixel in general. She's several versions out of date in all her software, doesn't mentor or inspire anyone with any creativity and of course hates Flash, but she won't really admit it. I can't stand the sight of her. I guesss I shouldn't be thinking of that fat load while I'm home, but you got me started.
- jpea0
as per usual, people are scared of something that they are ignorant of.
- enobrev0
well, don't forget about all the shit that's out there (since flashes inception) that drives the hatred.
I mean there's some real bad shit out there, and it's pretty prevalent.
I love flash, but I fucking hate it too.

i've seen some shitty ass html. but i won't knock it. there are tons of useless ass javascript thing-a-ma-bobs out there. but i still won't knock it. i've seen way to many java applet chatrooms that make me wanna puke. but i won't knock it. and don't get me started with the useless dhtml doo-dads out there.
taste is a matter of the person, not the product. if it was vice versa, web dev and design in general sucks major ass... the web would be overrated, overhyped, and overpriced with all its languages and fonts and css's and js's and asp's and jsp's and perl and apache and cgi and php and xml and flash and shockwave and...you get my point....being used in all its frivolous non-sensical glory.
good aesthetical and visionary taste comes in many flavors and is based on individual perception. its better to dislike the idiot building mousetrailers and sparklers in javascript, just give thanks that the langugage has 1000's of other usages other than crap gimmicky n00B ish...
that being said. i hate flash. :)
j/k

i agree, and you SHOULD knock all the stuff out there that sucks (if at least to cure boredom) but html doesn't require a 5 minute loading bar as well as cpu processaes, memory usage, network communication, plugin download and installation and all the other burdens to one's machine in order to find out that it was all just to make the 450 x 450 jpgs with the shitty dropshadows fade in and spin...
meanwhile, html is parsed, looks like shit -but the content is instant, you get what you need and get the fuck out.
and of course i see the potential in flash.. i've been touting potentials of it that not many have even acomplished as of yet... most current uses (even the pretty ones i see here all the time) are STILL very primitive.
but until now, and mostly likely continuing into the future, besides those who have used flash correctly, it fucking blows.

I do love Flash, but i hate it at home on my 56k. Waiting and waiting as the loading bar inches up only to be presented with an intro!
Grrrrr!
- JamesEngage0
I always try to make sure that the actual hub/engine of our sites is around 40k... the actual content of iamges are only jpegs anyway... so i don't think it matters... our latest site we're due to launch is 30k a sizth of the size of the companys current holding page...
again it's the overblown 3d rendered buttons imported into flash that bring things to a snails pace....
On another note... imagine if every flash site was removed... it would be a boring place.

i always start about XHTML/CSS and Standards compliance when people say: ''ah, so you do webdesign?''
i do that all the time, and they are like, ''is that some kind of flash'' or just ''well, i don't really understand all that'' and usually (as intended) they change the subject.
btw. i'd rather talk about the concept of graphic design, rather then webdesign.
- mirola0
the compression in flash mx is the dogs bollocks if you only use vectors. you can get something from 280k down to 180k if there's not too many bitmaps in it.
