pros/cons?
havent upgraded yet..heard great stuff like mail app is better and finder is quicker...
what is the bad stuff? I seen that the font app sucks, but suitcase is cool for me...what else?

best feature: performance boost. especially for sub 1ghz computers, my dual 1.25ghz at work barely feels faster however.
expose is cool too, but it takes getting used to. alt-tab works just like windows...which is a bonus. lots of minor annoyances fixed, I am now no longer minorly annoyed.

sounds cool... yeah, any performance enhancements I can get always is a plus...
any other stuff?

the alt tab has been around since OS 9 but for some reason they took it out of Jag.

Actually they didnt take it out- it just tabbed the dock icons then

performance is +++

I never bothered with the beta, so iChat AV is new for me and I have to say it's a blast the first time you use it.

Has anyone installed panther on a 400? I'm wondering if it would do me any good.

Definitely speeds up the low end Machines. My 667 MHz Titanium is much snappier. Family and friends with 400 and 450 G4, and 400 G3 not great improvement, even with just 128 MB of RAM. Of course, the more RAM the better, always.

i got a 550 Ti book with 768 RAm in it. I just ordered another 512mb chip to max it out a 1gb along with my Panther. Should I get good results? I hope so.

Hmm I'm a little lost. You said that it speeds up "low end" machines. So then why does your 667 Mhz Titanium run a lot faster, while a G4 with 400 Mhz experiences little improvement?

i installed the alley cat on a g3 450 blue & white tower with 512 megs o ram. it increased the speed of the dinder and the launching of photoshop by a lot.
the finder is more responsive when viewing a folder with a lot of files.
mail.app is so much much better. still no key command for the main mail window like in entourage. i kinda miss that.
expose is the fuckin shit with window options.
iChat AV is improved & dont think it is a beta anymore.
it is well worth the coin i think.
the speed feels like i was back in os 9 with how photoshop operated before os x.

speed is probably from an enhanced quartz extreme engine. so lower-end machines with good video cards (32mb and up) will be the ones with the most increase.

so no go on my 400 G4 with a gig of ram?
- one2meny0
I understand the confusion, I meant there was great improvement, even with NOT that much RAM, my bad.

Definitely a go on your 400 G4 with a gig of RAM. Better Memory Management in Panther and in general improvement for everything else speed wise. I only have 16 MB or VRAM.

Just loading panther on my G4 450 right now, I loaded it on my ibook 600, and even with a G3 (640 RAM) I noticed a significant difference.
Exposé is an awsome tool, can't wait to use. The interface is a hell of a lot smoother, was getting tired of the bar motif in the window skins. The search is very speedy, and intergrated in the finder window. Mail threads are very productive.
Font Book looks real interesting. But maybe I might just stick with Extensis X1 for just a while longer.
I'm really happy with this upgrade.
As it was mentioned in this thread ... Panther will boost the performance of ANY processor, and allocate memory a hell of a lot better to memory-hungry apps.

what about compatibility with software? How does it work with all your apps?
- _d0
All apps are working great so far. With the OS upgrade, I also decided to switch to InDesign, in order to rid myself of Classic altogether (I used Quark 5 daily).
Quark 6 is the worst peice of software ever produced. I have no intensions of using it any longer.
All other OS X native apps are running pretty sweet.

This sounds great - Can't wait to upgrade.

Is it true that I can "now" network to PCs without outside programs? (I'm still using OS 9 on my G4)
