i think we're entering an age where we're more comfortable with our artistic identities and our own 2000s style.
(as opposed to just ganking shit from past eras)
lotsa cool shit coming out.

I know, right?
but like-- who's stuff isn't derivitive right now? Who defines the 2000's era for you without reminding you much of past styles?

Well, if you cant put a label on a certain visual expression, its a sign you got a pretty good thing going, right?
The pixelstyle, 45 degrees, digital abstract etc only became a named style after being chewed, gnawed and finally devoured by a large mob of graphic cannibals. You can rely heavily on the past and still be pretty original and unique. Still I would hesitate to name '03 the year of the new and clicheless - everytime we see someting completely different, its immediately copy and killed by cloners everywhere ... Scarabin - gimme a link to something w/ a truely unique artictic identity and I'll rip it off

"black is the new grey "
I thought gray was the new white?
Does that mean that black is the new white?

I thought grey was the new black?
Young grasshopper, everything created is informed by something that came before.

Doesn't it mostly have to do with how well informed we are visually? I mean, you could lock yourself in a mountaintop cabin for ten years, cut off all contact with the outside world and create stuff. Come back down, put it on the internet, and within ten minutes two dozen webheads will tell you exactly who you ripped off.
I am a firm believer in the collective subconscious.
BTW: Pink is the new black. Just like in 1985.

I am the new black because I'm white.

we're still waiting for links of non-derivative design...

i'm not referring to any particular site, just an overall feeling i'm getting from the now.
stuff like fashion, music, etc in addition to graphic design.
for starters this trend in design for stencils. though it pisses me off because i've been stenciling way before corporate america discovered it was cool and i hate to see it turned into a corporate tool.
i just felt like the last part of the nineties was awkward.
could just be me, though...

Lack of talent is the new black
- DigitalMe0
perhaps your feelings of the now have something to do with your age and what's going on in your life.
btw: stenciling comes and goes. It's not really new. Madison Ave picks things up when they're widely accepted as fashionable in the target demographic's now.

yeah, that also occurred to me. i'm much more confident in my own skills than i was then.
