living here for three years...
places I recommend that aren't too touristy:
Sienna (Tuscany)
Cinque Terre (lots of german tourists though)
Lake Como (mountains)
Amalfi and surrounding coastsouthern italy (my favorite)
Calabria and the southern coast (you'll spend your whole time eating everything, esp the fresh seafood)
Sicilia
Sardegna (amazing meditteranean clear blue sea water and white sands...and still some hidden beaches)you'll love it no matter where you go!
best of luck

Milan is where i live. don't come here unless you really like fashion. otherwise its an ugly grey city with nothing going for it except the "aperitivo"
I say, fly into Rome. and then travel wherever.

anyone else!?

Milan is pretty good for shopping, but it's in no way near a beautiful city. It's very flat, traffic everywhere and very BIG overall.
Genova (sp?) is gorgeous, just by the mediterranian sea, and pretty close to San Remo (my fave italian city!)
Why don'tcha fly over to Sicily while you're at it? "La familia"...:)

One night in venice with girlfriend...
avoid turist areas, avoid gondolas, avoid turist restaurant,
just go for 'bacheri' and eat some 'folpetti' or 'polpetta' and have some wine...

I've heard about Ischia before.
Is there much to do there!?
Is it really touristy.....
(if thats such a word)
- unknown0
no its really chilled... lots of little villages in mountains and stunning volcanic beaches and natural hot springs.
wouldnt say it was touristy at all, capri is though.
I spent 8 days in ischia, then 3 in naples, which was pretty cool.
you can do day trips to pompeii to and go up versuvius.
I couldnt reommend it more

I've only been to Rimini, twas nice, loads of fanny around and great nightlife, but your bringing an apple to an orchard so I'd say one of the islands would be a safe bet, and get Rome in on the way
