What time of year are you going?
If in warm weather, go down south for sure - Capri is sooooo gorgeous. I've always wanted to go to Sardinia because the beaches are meant to be incredible but have always followed my brother around wherever he happens to be living at the time.
So far I can say Rome is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been in, I could spend a long time there... Milan sucks big time, Verona is loads of fun and good shopping, Capri and Sorrento and Pompeii are a fantastic trip for a week down from Rome, and Venice is perfect for one romantic day but boring more than that.
Have fun!

Oh yeah and those lakes are gorgeous - there is a spot near lago de gado (don't know if that's spelt right) called Cola which has an incredible lagoon with hot springs and you swim through waterfalls to get into a water filled grotto... last time I went in winter and it was snowing and the contrast between the snow and the hotsprings was so lush. Perfect place to impress your girlfriend with.

Cola Lagoon™
imagine the possibilities..
"okay boys tear out that spring and get the cola colouring coming in by the waterfall, I want 5 big neon Coke branded signs over there and a 25 foot santa standing right there by the grotto... oh and Chip, I want you to go and cut down a few hundred trees so people can see this from the freeway.. and get rid of those deer, they'll ruin the astroturf!"

Milano, Roma, etc. But to be honest venture out and see the countryside it's much more beautiful and cleaner and nice.

probably wise.. I tend to go on tangents y'know.
Its some kind of mental disorder, I tell myself thats its because I'm 'left brained' or 'creative' or some such bullshit - really its just because I'm a deranged, random fool with a nothing better to say. :§

I really liked Verona when I was there. Saw some ridiculously huge scale opera at the ampitheatre, 'Il Trovatore' I think it was. One of the main characters sang his aria and got such a massive ovation the whole scene was reset and he did it again.
Venice, though touristy is nonetheless definitely a place worth seeing.
The Dolomites are really great. Clean air.

i was only giving you a slap cos i suspect you enjoy it rasko...
Tangents are creative. It's called "lateral thinking". I find it weird how many 'creative types' don't have the ability to go off on one...
