    living here for three years...

    places I recommend that aren't too touristy:

    Sienna (Tuscany)
    Cinque Terre (lots of german tourists though)
    Lake Como (mountains)
    Amalfi and surrounding coast

    southern italy (my favorite)
    Calabria and the southern coast (you'll spend your whole time eating everything, esp the fresh seafood)
    Sicilia
    Sardegna (amazing meditteranean clear blue sea water and white sands...and still some hidden beaches)

    you'll love it no matter where you go!
