the music industry is changing. riaa's (and the artists) only chance to be profitable is to change with it and figure out how to thrive in the new way.
hanging on to the fucking past, suing 12 year olds, will only make people hate you. it's their fault they're still in a cave while everyone else is moving on without them.

Cy-
There are restrictions because there needs to be thanks to services like Napster and the like. Most bands don't offer 15 songs per CD and even if they do, most of those songs aren't any good. If you think that the future of CD's means you can do anything with the music then your mistaken. Apple's store, along with emusic even, and all the rest are offering alternative solutions. These solutions are part of the progress of the future. I am not standing up for the industry or their overbloated prices and restrictions, what I am standing up for is the change that is coming. I think a song is worth a dollar, and I like that I can buy just one. I also dont think unlimited burning and having my songs on 3 computers is a major restriction.
To be quite honest I haven't bought many songs from any of these services. I work for a music distribution company (www.verydistro.com) and with a variety of independent record labels. I recieve free music legally everyday as well as have a purchased CD collection of over 3,000 titles. I've known most of the owners of these companies and the bands since they started in the basement, they take care of me, they pay my bills, and they couldn't survive without such sales. Sure corporate music industry doesn't need the buck as much- its a given- but it's business. Fuckin the big guy, rippin Aerosmith songs isn't the only thing happening. the small guy suffers more.
The whole point of my argument was that a dollar is a fare price to pay for a stinkin' tune.

Radiosilient, your point was that you feel a song is worth a dollar, based on how you feel about the artists. My point was that compared to some subscription services, what Apple is doing is astronomically more expensive. I only hope Napster goes the subscription route. I think you should hope that too because te future of music is more "piracty" because ultimately, it can't be stopped. However, if you can subscrbe and easily download songs sand albums, it could quell the tide of Limewire and Kazaa.

Today is Napster's last day of existence.

I can vaguely remember the late '90s...
My Napster music library was extensive.
My RCA mp3 player took (I think) an SD card.
Oh, all the mislabeled songs. The misspelled artists. And the promise of unearthing a jam between Morrison and Hendrix that ultimately never took place...
