I think google is the "best" for sure...
but the results that are returned favor the commercial side of things without a doubt...
for instance if you type "flowers"... you will get websites trying to sell flowers before you get ones offering actual information on the subject

this is a bit off topic but...
internet explorer wont let me open google, it sends me to the microsoft auto search page or says that the page cannot be found.
any ideas or experience with this?

i have been enjoying this engine
the picture search gives me better returns and the web search is at least comparable.

good, and I've visited their offices on a product tour working with CMU. You'd be surprised, their servers are like falling off the shelves and shit, it's not what you think. :)

forestation,
it's possible you got infected with a new trojan (virus) going around. I got it sometime on Monday but took me more than a day to figure it out.
What happens is it creates a HOST file in your C:WindowsSystem32 directory that tells IE to send you to a specific IP when you request a certain website. In my case it redirected every search engine to a 404 page.
What you need to do is search for a file called "HOST" or HOSTS". If you find it open it up and check out the contents - you'll see what I'm talking about.
Anyway just delete the file and restart windows. That fixed the problem in my case..

I think the high ranking of commercial sites trying to sell you flowers and whatnot is likely due to the way google ranks pages. I've heard that it's mainly based on the number of outside sites linking directly to the site in question.
with a large e-commerce site who likely has many link exchanges with various directories and indexes, aswell as "best price online" type sites as part of its online marketing, not to mention banner advertising, you will get a higher google rating than, say, a botanist's personal home page on geocities which is linked within a close circle of similarly interested parties.
I agree that google is starting to produce less and less acurate results (maybe it's just warm fuzzy memories of the past). but it's to be expected when a technology matures, and people start figuring out how to beat the system. (remember when you could put a buh-zillion meta tags in your page and rank high in any search category on yahoo? same thing)
google will eventually be unseated from it's thrown just like yahoo! has been. And it'll probably be by microsoft with some sort of windows bundled search that makes it too damn easy to use anything else... either that, or breaks the other technologies to improve in comparison.
ramble ramble ramble...

no banner ads means a faster search. i dont mind the text based ads

yeah, I mean it has to do with a lot of things, the way they rank pages, but this has been discussed here many times. There directory system is rocking, I've managed to get the #1 spot for .wav: http://directory.google.com/Top/… I don't hate Google! :)
