what tarantino does (not my favorite film director but one I feel is very capable and entertaining) is, in fact, original in that he creates a synthesis or 'bricolage', out of the many homages and inspired components of his films. In relation to the almost non-existent nature of Matrix, Dark City, the Hulk, American Pie, and others, where the inhibition of creativity is commodified in the form of FX, sight gags, Corporate Mantras, etc...Tarantinos films provide some memorable moments that you wont embarrased to recall.

and damn them for not beating the philip k. dick/neuromancer rip-off matrix...which is about as philosophical as a beautiful mind.

Rare...
is there a new idea in the movie industry. Come on now, Hollywood is continue remaking movies. Usually the orginal is better and often times they do not share the same title.
Hopefully the studio that produces the second or third revision has purchased the rights to the original.

Kung fu bullshit?
May I say that in the past 5 (if not more) years, almost every single movie is inspired in what you just called kung fu bullshit. to the level that in todays movies hollywood tries to tell us, how good is drew barrymore with martial arts, its a joke, also the direction, the shots, photography, those tilted cameras, super fast zooms on the face before a fight, or when in trouble, And I can go like this forever.
I think Dark city and Matrix have a similar style, neo punk, dark or whatever you want to call it, there is a TON of movies like that, similar style, that doestn mean is a rip off..
I see more similarities with tron, that with dark city.

when THE MATRIX first came out and when i saw it, i insanely shouted to the world that it's a hollywood bigtime RIPOFF of dark city, ghost in the shell and serial experiments lain (the concepts of "the one" and having 2 different merging worlds etc)...
but no one did care to believe nor listen to me back then..
no wonder the matrix2 sucks ass becos this time, they had nothing to steal ideas from...ha.

I think Tarantino's films are very entertaining, and funny as f*ck, but his video clerk-in-the-know screenplays are more "pastiche" than "bricolage".
But whatever.
All this recursive post-Post Modernism is getting very boring. We need a paradigm shift, people...
- chokethefat0
talk to Darren Aronofsky concerning Paradigm shift in cinema..i believe in him!
xcept fcking Brad Pitt screwed Darren A.'s latest project codenamed 'The Fountain' everything was set for shooting till pitt pulled out few days before reckoning script is too complex blabla...wat a retard ..i'll curse him to fcking D++++ for that...
watch Pi & requiem for a dream, Darren A.'s prev works...splendid.
- Meeklo0
Well..
I cant believe you guys think that the concept of the one was stolen from another movie...What about the bible?
I cant believe, everyone throwing names that had similar parts to the matrix.. none of you named the bible..
- Meeklo0
Dark city? please..
have you seen the comparison they do between both of those movies? You can easly replace dark city with batman if you want, it will sitll work..LAME!
- balb0a0
Yeah, but Aronofsky pimped the jerky high contrast visuals in Pi from Tsukamoto's "Tetsuo:Iron Man" (which owes a lot to Eraserhead, and the German Expressionists, I guess).
"The originality of any work depends on the obscurity of its sources."
Aronofsky's not bad, though. I heard he's directing the next Batman pic... is that still true?

Many messiah stories predate the bible. It's basically an eternal character type. People dig using it for emotional weight.

The future looks bright.
Lyne Ramsay, Michael Winterbottom, Wes Anderson, Paul Anderson, Sofia Coppola, Todd Haynes, Mark Romanek, Spike Jonze, Scott McGehee
,David Siegel, Kátia Lund
Fernando Meirelles, Kimberly Peirce...
- scarabin0
no, aranofsky pulled out of the batman project.
thank fucking god.
i'd hate to see this great guy bought for what may be the lamest of all movie franchises.his style wouldn't even be appropriate for the film. it'd just kill his career.

on my hotlist are batman I and matrix I too. and man i love the paranoid feeling from alien I
- XC010
They were both made in Australia.
I thought it was by the same effects company, but possibly not.
- XC010
a company called dfilm did the vis effects on Dark City.
they are based in sydney too.
maybe they are mates.
- Bullitt0
The Matrix got its popularity more for its bullet-time effects.
Its old hat now and its been implemented into a ton of video games. No wonder the second film was shit. Darkcities styleing reminded me alot of the city of the lost children.
