"def jux has done more for hip hop in the past few years than anything i can remember since the early nineties new school era."
That's exactly what irritates me. It's this narrow sense of hip-hop and what it should be and this sense of entitlement that divides rather than it expands it. It's closed-minded and elitist.
Def Jux has done plenty for hip-hop, but more than Stones Throw? More than Project Blowed? More than BET Freestyle Fridays? More than Missy Elliott? More than Hot 97? More than Kay Slay? Each one has an impact just as big or bigger than Def Jux. Do you not count these folks because it's a direction you don't like or because their contributions are not valid?
The idea that aesop rock has a right to use style wars just because he's on def jux irritates me. it's implied in the video, and I might be overreading it, but it looks like I'm not the only one that got that idea. No beef with def jux, but they're by no means the be all and end all.

you're reading too much into it.
- kpl0
i like reading.

i would agree, def jux is far from epitome of hiphop. i particulary enjoy aesop rock for his unique voice and style. i think some of his lyrics are a little week and lack comprehendable meaning.
good jams thats all.
- mrdobolina0
hahaha, nah its all perspective man.
What about Big Daddy Kane?
- foRz0
yeah, dude...its all about positivity...anyone who contributes positively...yes, kay-slay (formerly dez one) stones throw, and everybody else you mentioned. many of which have satired (in a positive way) movies like beat street and songs like rappers delight much more than aes rock. i meen, how many times has missy sampled an old scool break, or dressed up like a b-girl in her videos.. its all about having fun man.
i think def jux is one of a few that are taking things in whichever directions they feel like going in, and i think thats dope. but if you prefer hot 97, thats your thing man, i won't hate on you.
peace

what about g-unit?
;)

ok. you know I know what bugs me now.... not the def jux entitlement theory but...
Missy elliott posing as a b-girl. First off, she's at least 80 pounds too heavy.
It's like, stop appropriating old-school imagery. you're hip-hop, cool. And I know you like style wars. no need to drape yourself all over it like you got something to prove.
anyway, aesop rock is ok. I liked 1000 Deaths...but nothing since grabbed me...
- kpl0
ok. sorry. I need to remind myself,
stop the hate...
stop the hate...
stop the hate...
stop the hate...ok, I'm cool.
- kpl0
i feel you pain.
and some other things too, hope you don't mind.

oops, wrong thread.

if you're stressin over somethin too much, i don't think that's hip-hop at all. like someone said, it's about having fun and doin somethin positive. but i personally think def jux has kept it real. they love style wars and ill graff and b-boy/girl culture. it's not biting, it's paying overdue homage. people that listen to hot 97 (99% of them) don't even know what style wars is. the new generation of "hip-hop"pers don't even know about the history and roots of the culture. for instance, ask them who afrika bambaataa or kool herc were. they would be like "oh yea, they did that joint with ja rule." there's hip-pop and then there's hip-hop.

word.
...even though this thread is like four days old now.

ps. even though i started this thread... and a valiant supporter of the def jukies, don't hate hot 97 either... remember, they were the shizzel back in the dizzel. :)
