I dont have super human hears..
I havethe same ears as everybody.
When encoding on mp3, you loose quality. That is a fact.If you cant tell the difference, its great! im happy for you..
I sugeest you also use the lowerfile size, and why not.. mono! Its your choice.I also like MD better..
when it comes to music, I think I pod is great, as a hardrive dough.peace

However, when you compress at 320kbps using the LAME encoder, my guess is that the soundquality is limited more by the iPod, than by the compression.
Oh, and the iPod plays .wav files :) On a 40GB thats still a great number of songs!

they did a study not too long ago that said 256 kbps MP3s are indistinguishable from the original CD track. nope, don't know where it came from.
btw, these $50 fontopia earplugs I got emphasizes the mp3 artifacts alot more than the crappy tinny ones the ipod came with.

my friend bought one of the first models of the ipod...
recently we took it up snowboarding, running through the car stereo, the bat was full and went flat in less than 2 hours!!??
this put a dampner on the ipod for me, my guess is he has been fucking up the re-charge memory, not letting it charge fully before using it again. but still!
also, isnt the new compression format AAC supposed to be better quality than mp3 ?

you can get a cigarette power adapter to keep the ipod charged.
and as far as better compressioin techniques are concerned, what does it matter? are you that strapped for hd space? if you want perfect quality, just use .wav format.

Just got the 40GB last week, best AUS$900 I've spent... to the original poster - do some research before you rant ;o)
1]. You can use WAV or AIFF uncompressed files for your iPod if you don't want to carry your whole collection with you - which is the point of the iPod
2]. You can take MP3s (or anything else) from the iPod with third party sharewares (usually less than US$10) and worth it - especially when your HD fails and you've just lost "everything" For example this little app: http://www.thelittleappfactory.c…

I second the opinion that you should buy your ipod from an apple centre. I have my third one due to hard drive failure. I have the 30 gig and i have 30 gigs of music on it. seems the bigger the hard drive the more problems you can have. I do like it though, if only they'd sort out the gap between tracks somehow

if you rip a mix cd, the ipod stops at the end of a track to buffer the next one, hence a 1 second gap between them, a pisser if your like me and have alot of mix cds

the fontopia earphones are good cos they (proverbally) show everything...great bass, good treble, ok midtones. compared to the ipod earphones: crappy bass, crappy treble, ok midtones.
I only hear artifacts clearly for 128 kbps and below mp3s...

They are more expensive for alot of reasons... one style and the effort to make it, usuabilty- go ahead and buy a cheaper RIO one that has built in mics and laser pointers but try to access your songs on the spot and see why Apple simple menu system alone is worth it-
HD storage- I have a back up OS on mine that I use to boot my computer when needed.
Flawless sync with Apple apps like itunes
