They are more expensive for alot of reasons... one style and the effort to make it, usuabilty- go ahead and buy a cheaper RIO one that has built in mics and laser pointers but try to access your songs on the spot and see why Apple simple menu system alone is worth it-
HD storage- I have a back up OS on mine that I use to boot my computer when needed.
Flawless sync with Apple apps like itunes

It amazes me sometimes- my friend who buys $230.00 jeans from diesel complains about the ipod cost all the time.
