does anyone else agree that this is not due to violent video games, but rather BAD PARENTING? who the hell lets a 16 year old have access to a .22 cal rifle unsupervised? isnt this why there are ratings on games? im not a parent yet, but i know for a fact that ill do much better than the parents of these monsters.

They should be asking why violent videos are so popular in the first place. Meeting a consumer demand perhaps?
Our troubled human psychology.

blaming video games and blaming parentings are both cop-outs.
- mcLeod0
blaming parents is certainly not a cop out. who else is to blame for not teaching a child the difference between right and wrong. sure the kids themseves are to blame first and foremost, but theres a certain age when children are able to make correct decisions, and before they reach that age, their upbringing should be monitored by their parents.
if you dont think parents should be blamed for this sort of behavior, then id hate to meet your kids.
- kpl0
mcLeod, you ignore that there are other influences in a child's life than their parents, beyond what parents can control, and believe it or not, kids have a mind of their own and their own free will.
- mcLeod0
what is your theory then? Im not ignoring that fact. im well aware that kids can be influenced by many different things intheir lives. but when it comes to their own free will, somewhere in their upbringing, good morals need to be instilled in them so they know that decisions like shooting people is in fact wrong. if parents dont do that, then who will? not tv, not video games, not their peers.
im curious as to who you think is to blame if its not parents and its not video game companies.

first off, define good parenting. I mean, really define it to the last minutia. you can't. you can come up with your own subjective scheme but no one will agree. Quality of parentage is a nebulous term which in the end means little to nothing. This is not a cut and dry legal matter. There are blatant examples of bad parentage, but what can you conclude from kids who go bad but seem to have decent parents?
Second: peers, not parents, are the #1 influence on a child's life. Scientific fact...plenty of studies have been done on this, and when I have the time I can dig up some of these.
Third: in this mass-mediated age, how can you control every influence a child could receive? And how can you control how a child can react to such stimuli?
Last: you have the issue of free agency (free will). There is no foolproof way to keep anyone, child or not, under total control without nefarious or immoral means. And any knowledgable parent knows that the more control you place over your kids, the more they will rebel. Morals are subjective. They can be learned but also be unlearned. Teaching right from wrong does not prevent kids from doing the wrong thing, nor mean they believe what they're being taught in the first place.
do I have a theory? nope. nor do I need one to believe that your theory is not totally on the mark.

i agree good parenting is very subjective, but i think im speaking about this particular case, which is a rather extreme case. its hard to imagine a good parent giving their child access to a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition and not even being aware that theyre out shooting at other people. 2 things right there that are examples of bad parenting.
i agree that peers are the number 1 influence. but i had peers that told me to jump off a bridge (figuratively), but i didnt do it because somewhere growing up i was taught that jumping off bridges would be stupid.

If it was a riot or bigger series of events caused by the game then maybe the blame... but seriously pull up your panties. We should outlaw tank top style white under shirts, I mean for a guy wearing one of those might make him feel strong. With all these guys feeling tough we would come into conflicts of who is tougher. Someone could get hurt in one of these conflicts, maybe even killed. So lets ban all sleeve less tee's .. THEY ARE KILLING OUR CHILDREN.

there has always been violence among kids. isn't one of the first stories in the bible where one brother racked his other brother upside the head with a rock? the problem is that we've got too many freakin people around. you're going to have a few bad eggs for every hundred people or so. the reason this looks like it's getting out of control is just the simple fact that the population is increasing exponentially. more people = more bad eggs.
and man, i can't wait to play manhunt.

i did not read all, but i'd agree with Honda..
if ever i'd have kids they wouldn't watch very much TV, in fact I would not allow much of the commercial rubbish anyway. Same for video games.
Let them have books and draw, create, and play outside, lots!
