Hi, I was wondering how many mockups to do for a first freelance job.. I dont want to give them to much to choose from that would confuse them. I know it probably depends on the project but what is the average?

Draw it in crayon and give them 2 or 3. Then refine by just drawing overthem.

The more you show them, the more confused they get. I usually just show one.

2 or 3, but what normally happens is they like a bit of one, and a bit of another and it ends up going from being a great design into a frankensteins monster thing, damn clients. I always charge them for mockups though, no freebies here.

Thanx.. Everyone.. I agree with u all except for calling them up and telling them uggh its blue i think and drawing a crayon version.. Too many is too much too look at and would cause confusion and most likely they will be mixing designs together and mixing elements from 8 designs would turn out to be a eyesoar... thanks again for ur replys...

Okay,, ???!!! The site is fairly simple. Mockups consisted of mainly the same color combinations, just different navigation for an investment firm.. I just spoke the programmer im partnered with and he disagrees... Wants to send all of them.. 7 mockups isnt it way too much??????????

tell him he;s a fucking madman.
its YOUR job to drop the shit and choose the good. If you take all those the client will be lost and pick bits of this bits of that and it will be a shambles and you will die after killing your programmer friend and and and...

true true.. Im going to narrow it down to the strongest designs and give him a swift kick in the ass... thanx agian lata!

2 to 3 - Do one you like, one they'll like and you can handle, and maybe one in between - that way you'll satisfy their expectations, but then show them whats possible with your designy one, and if they like the in between one, the compromise, then everyones happy. Its all in the sell. But yes, never more than 3 as others have suggested.

Unless there is something about the job that makes a clear # of directions, always design 3. Have a strategy for each of the three.
If you're designing logos, then you show several. That's a different animal though.

hey "dstlb" How much do you charge for mockups?

0. I Sign to the client. Ya know why? Cause it helps the client develop their visual and conceptual interpretation skills (on complex project yes, I do interpretive dance). And its all about helping the client, no?
