does anyone know where I could get sheets of vinyl "sticker" paper either in the new york city area or online? I tried google, but maybe there is a different way to phrase "vinyl adhesive sheets"?
I see that Derrick Hodgson
http://www.madreal.com/
hand prints and hadcuts his stickers and I think that is a great way to be involved with your art throughout as many steps as possible... know what I mean?... without having to hand it over to a printer and all that...thank you.
by the way, Derick Hodgson is sick as shit!

hey taragee-
did you happen to find out where your friend got the sheets?
I have a couple of nice small screens at my place that I want to use to do some 2 color stickers. I have seen the result and it can turn out friggin' great.
I would email you to ask you but I figured it would be good to post it here in case anyone else wanted to know.
Thanks.

i used to do that kinda stuff.
dont have time to try linking sites, but you can get some free samples from paper companies likeRexam
Sihl
SEALand there are a whole slew of other companies, but those were the ones i stuck with.
3M is probably the best stuff out there, but i dont see any reason why youd be wanting to use 3M for stickers.
the stuff i used to get from REXAM is called DMCVLA3 there are dfferent finishes for it too, so like you can get matte, lustre, photo quality etc. i usually stuck with matte (no pun intended).
anyway, i hope that helps. just google for those companies and youll find their sites to order some samples. =)

also check any graphic or paper stores in your phone book. Alot of times they have adhesive backed vinyl.

thank you everyone for your responses. they were super helpful.
I found exactly what I was looking for and more in it's right in new york city (new york is the most convenient city in the world). you can get different colored sheets of professional (mr. sticker guy, etc.) quality sheets of vinyl "sticker" sheets at this place called LV Adhesive (212)925-2600 (it's on 48th and 10th or something like that. call them up and they will tell you their exact location).
tell them standard screen sent you.
(speaking of standard screen, if you plan on screen printing the vinyl to make your own stickers, you can get the ink you need at standard screen at 121 varick st at spring. they are very helpful there.)does anyone know if there are any issues I should be aware of when cutting vinyl? pen blade, right? should I make a cut-out out of cardboard or something?

unless you are making fancy shapes, then there are no real issues with cutting adhesive vinyl.
live up your ruler and cut. no big deal. just do a great big grid and you cant fuck up.

what about custom shapes? I figure I can be pretty loose about the edges, etc, when I am only doing small runs of an image, etc, but I was thinking if I printed huge sheets of a small images, is there a "cookie cutter" method to make production somewhat easier?... I wonder how much it would cost to get a plexiglass outline of an image at canal plastic.

depending on what you mean by "small run", you might wanna take your file and your vinyl to a local signshop to be printed and cut.
many large format printers nowadays can print and cut your stickers all in one session. this is the easiest way to do things. pretty quick ,efficient way of doing it. if you bring in some vinyl they can use, then you will only have to pay for time (which generally isnt too expensive for what you would be wanting).

thanks Bio.
I never even considered those options. I was so focused on wanting to do everything myself. it would be super easy (which hopefully means inexpensive) for some shop to cut the sheets for me.
small runs (<50) I could do myself no problem. I could probably do 500 myself just fine. it would just take longer (and that's alright too... it just makes the piece more valuable). I'm sure once I get to messing around with it I will see what works best for me and eventually post it here... if anyone cares.thanks again Bio and everyone else.

I'm going to my first real "underground" S+M party tomorrow night, so I will see just how much fun vinyl can be.
