Some very late nights and a few chewed fingernails later and I think I've got a handle on ditching tables in favour of CSS.
Heres a template which I plan on applying to the rest of the site - any feedback on browsers compatibility etc. appreciated.

looks good on my side. ie6.pc
what made you decide to go this direction. i have been forced to learn coding like this recently and was a bitch because i was working from a site that was already built and had tons of styles with inherited styles.

cause it's the way ahead and also the new standard.
less code
more control
easily updatable
quicker to load
portable to other user agents
accessible
etc etc

I think I hear a can of worms being opened.
CSS only layouts within standards compliant browsers isa massive debate. I know a few purists that balk at any attempt to backwards compatible some of their sites. They have their reasons I suppose.

yep.. they're people with no clients.

when things blow out like that in mac... try testing all your pages with netscape 7. netscape is less forgiving and will often show you code errors. sometimes when u wanna break up stuff use div style="clear:both"

nicely done. was it a pain in tha ass?
looks well on safari, ie. 5.2 running os x

yep, most of them are. Strange how dogma seems to get even stronger soemtimes...when clients are walking out the door.
that said, there is alot going for standards compliance.

Thanks for the feedback.
Yes there is a huge learning curve - but worth it I think.

Bonseff - thanks for taking the time - do most CSS sites bugger up in that browser?

looking good to me.
i am working on a css redesign myself. ie/mac has been the biggest challenge for me.
designing sites this way is definitely where things are headed. now that I am figuring it out myself I never want to go back.

btw, I tested it on PC - Mozilla, Firebird, IE6, IE5.5, IE5.0 and no problems. Not sure if I can do much about Mac browser probs as I don't have a Mac :-/

I've noticed a definite style of site by people using CSS... quite worrying.

WhiteSneaks - I hear you. Doing all that shit with multiple nested tables and 1pixel spacers is totally pants!

not sure style junkie
i mean this one works finehttp://www.publicconsumption.com…
my next redesign is going to use divs so ill be going through the same bumps as you. but i cant tell you right now why it looks buggy in this browser.
maybe because its mac and ie
:)anyhoo, nice work and keep truckin

engage - that's because bloggers and coders got their head round it first.
Once designers get used to it I think it will take off.
I'm looking forward to doing some experimenting once I have the basics down.
