there are still many great experimental sites. I think there has simply been a huge increase in the amount of portfolio sites by designers who expressed intention is to tow the latest trends and earn as much money as possible. boring and bland..
Look at the threads on this and other design sites. many designers arent concerned about the 'broader' aspects of the 'profession'. Much of it is shallow in the extreme.

"Pity the high-powered, market-driven, modern designers. They're well paid for their commercial sex, but passion eludes them"

well, you just cant expect the "internet" to be a truly revolutionary place unless its Revolution, Inc. It's like cave painting....

Cybrain,
I think the same thing basically. There were so many sites doing stuff with actionscript when people were first figuring out how far you could take it.
But then, watching a ball bounce, or something move in relation to the mouse got kind of boring.
It was always cool to see the stuff on Praystation and how it was implmented into a bigger picture: menus, navigation, etc.
Same with Natzke.com and several others.
I think many people got over all the stuff that had no point to it, and started to find ways to make it have a use and build off the AS they learned. Because look where it is today. People thought they'd pack their portfolios with all that experimental stuff, just stuff that had no use really, and thought that web design companies were going to be busting down their doors. Some people were lucky, yah. But look what it lead to. Good, useful, profitable work dynamic content, databases, XML, video, great animated artwork, 3d games, what am I leaving out?
It's good to look back and see that for many it did lead to something beyond all that.

Isn't it just a case of 'applied' experimentation?

in response to... "the rest of us got to shovel the poop"
I didn't just wake up one day and blam. I too had to shovel poop.
the point is that after shoveling - I went home and worked my ass off on my own stuff...
and slowly they switched places - I shoveled less and got hired to experiement.
there are no "lucky ones" just people who work really really hard - fail, keep trying and eventually hard work and determination pay off.

deffo. a case of building up your experimental side and then unleashing it to your clients... with them comfortable in the fact that what you're creating is solid and forward thinking but not flakey. Anyone can have an idea... it's the realisation thats the key.

well said - Engagestudio

thanks Praystation...
Did you know we did some initial tests for 'Collage'
Have you been working with Jesse Shadoan?

is not a case though that what many regarded a experimental was ultimately pointless. any experimentation should have an agenda/goal. the passion for some lies in what josh said. you work you ass of in work and work your ass off at home. love what you do not what it can do for you.

no shit ?
I've just be jamming with Orion at the moment - he's an amazing designer. We did a project a while back for madonna - but this project was the first we both got to volley back and forth with some of my random generators.
he just started a new job at http://www.buck65.com - but I hope we can still jam on projects together.

sorry not buck65 - I think it's just called buck.
I can't remember.
sorry.

Here is some of the stuff we played around with...

Engagestudio - those are some lovely test screens.
what do you think of what we ended up doing ? - obviosly those are just the backgrounds - if you keep watching that URL I'll be posting the rest of work later this week.

Word JD on hard work. It's the only avenue. I recently had a friend confused by why we were putting 'concept' (the architectural/industrial design term for 'experimental') projects on our new site. I think they're important to show thinking and exploration that isn't client response driven. They're also just fun work? Work then sleep, no? If I'm not working for clients I'm working on something for me.
