Is it worth registering one? I dunno does .org or .net at the end spell-out no visitors?
I am still brainstorming for a kid's comics company name and everything's taken. Even urls that with no sites or dns entries are registered, just so the owners can keep a tab on them you know (jerks!). The whole dictionary's been bought!

Sure its worth it! Just as long as you do the proper marketing. .com's are a little more well known, but thats not gonna stop people for visiting your site! Just make it nice, and have content that people like and they will return!

i always thought .nets are for networks and .orgs are for non-profits... liek how .edus are for schools...

ahh..it really doesnt matter now!
Thats how they wanted things in the begining, but because of all of these domain buyers, that just keep buying and hijacking, and leaving them stagnent...just as long as you have a domain that suites your project is all that really matters now!

if you can't come up with a .com name, you're not using your head. A .net or .org on a personal site or a business (that's neither non-profit nor internet provider) is wrong and looks bad first impressions-wise. (I do like foreign domains though.)
True Story:
I have a friend, in a band. Wanted me to do the site. I say ok. He went and got the domain w/o my consultation. Wound up withI refuse to build it and have not talked to him since.
That and
he got a golden lab AND AND AND named it "Madison" no less.Jeeez.

.com = company.
.net = holding page.

the dotcom of mine has been registered for 4 years with no site so I got the dotnet instead - who gives a fuck anyway, and yes I still have friends.
:P

.com = good choice of words and /or name... [or just lucky]
.net = sensible enough to not bother trying to buy the .com off some twat thats taken it and now wants to sell it for a profit.

"I refuse to build it and have not talked to him since." - all because of the domain?
We've got a winner for the 'most immature comment ever' on Newstoday.

If the company is Canadian (Redmond, I check you're from good old Canada :) ), what about a .ca domain?
Or get both a .net and .com -- as in KidsComics.net and KidsComicsCompany.com

Yeah, thanks, I don't want to add comics in the url cuz it'd be too long to type-out. I'll figure something-out or just go with org, biz, tv, whatever.
This thread was enlightning.

Have you ever considered whoising the domain that you want that is already taken and offer to buy it from them? Sure, you won't be able to get it for under 10 dollars like how a new registration cost. Sure, you'll be letting the domain "hijackers" win the battle, but the domain industry is no more different than the real estate industry in the buying and selling of property. Would you call those people house hijackers?
In the end, just because the domain is taken, doesn't mean you still can't have it.
