Have you ever considered whoising the domain that you want that is already taken and offer to buy it from them? Sure, you won't be able to get it for under 10 dollars like how a new registration cost. Sure, you'll be letting the domain "hijackers" win the battle, but the domain industry is no more different than the real estate industry in the buying and selling of property. Would you call those people house hijackers?
In the end, just because the domain is taken, doesn't mean you still can't have it.
